Job summary

UNM Hospitals in Albuquerque is seeking an entry-level Prosthetic/Orthotic Technician within the CTH Orthotics department. The role fabricates simple prosthetic/orthotic devices to support maximum medical improvement and requires basic mechanical hand skills.

On-the-job training will be provided, with opportunities to work across patient age groups. Responsibilities include casting, cost control, managing supplies, equipment care, safety, and professional development, while adhering to hospital

Responsibilities

• CASTS - Fabricate and finish prosthetics/orthotics for upper/lower extremities and spinal orthoses.

• EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Ensure proper care and safety of equipment and supplies.
• DEVELOPMENT - Participate in educational programs and professional development.
• PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety policies and protocols.

Position Summary:
Fabricate simple prosthetic/orthotic devices to provide maximum medical improvement for patients with musculoskeletal conditions. Assist higher level prosthetic/orthotic technicians and orthotist. This is an entry level position which provides on-the-job training. Ensures adherence to Hospital and Departmental Policies and Procedures. Patient care assignment may include; Neonate, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult and Geriatric age groups.

Detailed responsibilities:

• CASTS - Fabricate and finish plastic and/or metal prosthetics/orthotics for upper extremity, lower extremity, and spinal orthoses


• COST CONTROL - Utilize parts and supplies in a manner that maximizes efficient and cost-effective production of prosthetic/orthotic devices


• SUPPLIES - Assist in ordering, care, maintenance, and utilization of department equipment, supplies, and inventories


• EQUIPMENT & SUPPLIES - Ensure proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies; promote workplace safety


• DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops


• PATIENT SAFETY 1 - Follow patient safety-related policies, procedures and protocols


• PATIENT SAFETY 2 - Demonstrate proactive approach to patient safety by seeking opportunities to improve patient safety through questioning of current policies and processes


• PATIENT SAFETY 3 - Identify and report/correct environmental conditions and/or situations that may put a patient at undue risk


• PATIENT SAFETY 4 - Report potential or actual patient safety concerns, medical errors and/or near misses in a timely manner

Physical Conditions: Heavy Work: Exerting 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 25 to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or 10 to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects or people. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Medium Work.
