Job summary

Butte County State’s Attorney’s Office in Belle Fourche, SD, seeks a Deputy State's Attorney to perform routine professional legal work in prosecuting civil and criminal cases, juvenile crimes, and juvenile abuse and neglect matters.

The Deputy may work with law enforcement in investigations, review offenses and evidence to make charging decisions, and review petitions to determine courses of action, including child custody recommendations and attending proceedings.

Qualifications

Candidates must be licensed to practice law by the South Dakota Supreme Court, or eligible to take the next South Dakota Bar Examination.
Recent or imminent law school graduates may apply if eligible for the next SD Bar Exam.
Completion of a pre-employment background check is required.

Responsibilities

Prosecute civil and criminal cases, including juvenile crimes and juvenile abuse/neglect.
Collaborate with law enforcement in investigations and case development.
Review offenses and evidence to determine charging decisions in criminal/juvenile cases.
Review petitions and determine appropriate courses of action; make recommendations on child custody and parental rights.
Attend legal proceedings and provide advices on civil matters such as contracts, labor law, and taxation.
