Northrop Grumman’s Space Systems – Propulsion Division is seeking a Propulsion Engineer / Principal Propulsion Engineer to provide leadership to our Nozzle Design and Analysis team in our Promontory (Brigham City) offices.

Role description & Responsibilities:

The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform thermal analysis on solid rocket motor nozzle components. The propulsion engineer will conduct analysis for motor development, verification to design requirements, and production support. At times, the engineer will define testing for material property characterization and help develop analysis methods and tools. Work is performed using multiple in-house and commercial thermal analysis codes. Experience in the thermal/fluids discipline and in working with numerical methods is essential.

Job Duties:

  • Analyze the thermal performance of solid rocket motor nozzles

  • Correlate postfire data to pre-test predictions to validate analytical models

  • Support production with timely assessment of manufacturing defects from a thermal perspective

  • Define boundary conditions and develop approaches for thermal analysis of rocket motor components

  • Define and apply models to predict in-depth thermal response

  • Prepare technical presentations and reports related to work performed

  • Help to maintain technical standards related to thermal/fluids analyses

  • Define testing for material property characterization

Basic Qualifications:

  • This requisition may be filled at either Engineer level or Principal Engineer level.

  • The minimum experience for the Engineer level is 2 years with BS degree or 0 years with MS degree.

  • The minimum experience for the Principal Engineer level is 5 years with BS degree or 3 years with MS degree.

  • Knowledge of the thermal/fluids discipline with a primary focus on computational methods

  • Broad understanding of mechanical design, material behavior, structural analysis

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills

  • Excellent time management and organizational skills

  • Detail oriented but able to understand the big picture

  • Ability to travel: Travel expectation of 0% – 5%

  • Ability to obtain a security clearance

Preferred Experience:

  • Thermal analysis experience

  • Proficient in programming: Matlab, C++, Python, Fortran, or other languages

  • Experience with CAD tools, including NX, and mesh generation

  • Preferred M.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with emphasis on thermal/fluid course work

Education/Certifications:

  • B.S. degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering and 2 years’ experience or MS and 0 years of experience

  • Position can be filled one level higher, BS and 5 years or MS and 3 years of experience

Salary Range: $75,300 - $112,900

Salary Range 2: $92,600 - $139,000

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
