Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, or related field preferred.
  • 3+ years with appraisal district, financial consulting, or major tax agency recommended.
  • Familiarity with property tax laws and appraisal district procedures.

Job description

The Property Tax Protest Team Lead will lead and support our high performing Property Tax Protest Department. This role is ideal for a diligent professional who thrives in a fast-paced environment and has a strong background in property tax processes and appraisal district procedures. The ideal candidate is highly organized and capable of leading a team to achieve results through strategic communication, compliance oversight, and effective problem solving. At least 3 years of appraisal, financial consultation or tax agency experience is highly recommended.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and support the daily operations of the team, ensuring productivity, compliance, and performance goals are met.
  • Act as a skilled representative for an extremely successful and innovative company which owns property across numerous markets and asset classes that is involved in all aspects of the real estate and finance business.
  • Assist customers save on property taxes through valuation appeals and exemption filing
  • Train, mentor, and evaluate the team while promoting best practices, compliance standards, and professional development.
  • Preparing and submitting property tax appeals based on research, analysis, and strategy
  • Managing communications and notices from a variety of taxing authorities
  • Supporting protest hearings with research, documentation, and deadline tracking
  • Staying up to date on property tax laws and policy changes across jurisdictions
  • Handling online notices of property assessment and submitting appeals
  • Negotiating value settlements with county appraisers and out-of-state assessors
  • Creating and maintaining files for newly acquired properties
  • Conducting cost-benefit analyses to assess the impact of assessed values
  • Verifying ownership and occupancy status with local appraisal districts (e.g., HCAD)
  • Acting as a key liaison between our team and county/taxing officials
  • Organizing support files and documentation, and leading special projects as assigned
  • Tracking team performance during protest season
  • Analyzing hearing results to decide on necessary litigation
  • Daily in-person presence in our Houston office and travel required to attend review board hearings (company car provided when necessary)
  • Collaboration with our legal, acquisitions, payables, and collections departments to improve appeal results

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Real Estate, or a related field (preferred).
  • 3+ years of experience with an appraisal district, financial consulting firm, or major tax agency is highly recommended
  • Familiarity with property tax laws, appraisal district procedures, and tax protest processes.
  • Familiarity with HCAD and other Texas appraisal districts
  • Experience in property valuation and navigating protest hearings
  • Understanding of, and ability to complete, all major approaches to real estate valuation (income, cost, sales comparison)
