Job summary

City of Fate is seeking a dedicated Property Standards Specialist to oversee the city’s code compliance program, including inspections and corrective actions. The role offers 4–9 hour shifts with a half-day on Fridays, focusing on immediate public safety and health for Fate residents.

You will inspect, educate, document, and enforce housing, zoning, health, and safety codes, maintain records, issue citations, and represent the City in court when needed.

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of one year experience in Code Enforcement.
  • Basic Code Enforcement Officer certification required.
  • Valid Texas driver’s license required.
  • Combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct daily field inspections for nuisance, sanitation, and zoning code compliance.
  • Attend community meetings and engage with residential groups to address issues.
  • Receive citizen complaints about unsightly properties and disputes.
  • Educate the community on city housing, zoning, health, and safety standards.
  • Maintain inspection records and prepare reports and statistics.
  • Issue citations and represent the City in court as needed.
  • Prepare files and documents for City boards and presentations.
  • Process open records requests.
  • Issue contract work orders for abatement services when needed.
  • Conduct neighborhood assessments and surveys to determine property condition.
  • Collect data to aid in program planning.
  • Notify owners of violations and recommend corrective actions; monitor compliance.
  • Input inspection data and notifications into the database.
  • Serve as City liaison for codes and permits with the public and contractors.
  • Prepare and file property liens for abatement when needed.
  • Assist in researching and rewriting municipal codes and ordinances.

Job description

We are looking for a dedicated and detail-oriented Property Standards Specialist to join our team. This position offers 4‑9 hour shifts with a half-day on Fridays. The role is responsible for overseeing the City’s code compliance program, including identification, investigation, and initiation of corrective actions for violations of municipal ordinances and state law, with a primary focus on immediate public safety and health of residents in the City of Fate.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct daily field inspections and re-inspections of residential and commercial property to ensure nuisance, sanitation, and zoning code compliance.
  • Attend community meetings and work directly with residential groups to alleviate neighborhood issues.
  • Receive citizen complaints/concerns on unsightly properties and property rights disputes.
  • Educate community on city standards in housing, zoning, health, and safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections and actions taken, prepare technical and statistical reports.
  • Issue citations as required, prepare documentation, and represent the City in court cases when necessary.
  • Prepare files, recommendations, and documents for presentations to City boards as needed.

  • Conduct neighborhood assessments and surveys to determine overall property condition.
  • Collect data required to assist the department in the development of program plans.
  • Notify property owners of violations regarding City codes and ordinances; make recommendations for corrective actions in accordance with current codes and ordinances and monitor compliance.
  • Input inspection data and owner notifications into database system and update case information.
  • Serve as City liaison for codes and permits when dealing with the general public, contractors and business owners.
  • Prepare and file property liens for abatement services when needed.
  • Assist in researching, drafting and re‑writing municipal codes and ordinances as well as the development of forms and other informational material to address various compliance issues.
  • Assist Public Works department with removal and disposal of illegally dumped items throughout the city.
  • Provide support to other City departments as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience in Code Enforcement.
  • Possession of Basic Code Enforcement Officer certification.
  • Possession of a valid Texas driver’s license.
  • A combination of education, training and experience providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of codes, ordinances and other local or State statutory guidelines related to housing, zoning, health and safety.
  • Knowledge of department safety rules and procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret codes, ordinances, State laws and other regulatory documents.
  • Ability to prioritize daily duties, meet deadlines and perform multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Ability to tactfully respond to requests and inquiries from the general public.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with employees.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Skill in identifying and resolving issues, concerns and needs.
  • Skill in operating standard office equipment including a computer and associated software such as Microsoft Office.
