Job description

The City of Madison is hiring a Property Maintenance Inspector

This position involves technical and inspection work to enforce City rules related to environmental issues and zoning. Responsibilities include responding to property complaints, conducting inspections, identifying violations, issuing notices, and following up until issues are resolved. The role also involves coordinating seasonal contractors and working under supervision to ensure compliance with policies.

Movement to a Property Code Inspector 2 depends on workload demands and will be achieved through internal or external competition.

Field Work
  • Investigate property maintenance complaints and conduct inspections related to grass and weed control, snow removal, graffiti, junk, debris, tree concerns, zoning restrictions, right of way obstructions, and other projects.
  • Conduct onsite code conferences with property owners explaining observed violations.
  • Coordinate abatement actions to ensure compliance.
  • Enter inspection results into Accela.
Administrative Work
  • Draft official notices, citations, letters, and referrals.
  • Respond to inquiries via email and phone from property owners, management, contractors, and residents.
  • Issue re-inspection fees and maintain accurate records.
  • Review resident concerns, create cases, and research property histories.
  • Refer issues to relevant agencies and coordinate training for seasonal staff.
Customer Service Work
  • Respond to questions about property maintenance and city ordinances.
Miscellaneous Work
  • Participate in legal actions, appear in court as needed, collaborate on city programs, educate residents, and train less experienced inspectors.

Minimum requirements include one year of experience with independent communication responsibilities or possession of an associate's or bachelor's degree. Alternatively, two years of experience in recordkeeping and explaining policies, along with familiarity with inspection methods and computer software, are acceptable.

The role requires a valid driver's license and reliable transportation, with mileage reimbursement. The position involves outdoor work in all weather conditions, requiring physical inspections of residences and businesses throughout the City.
