Job summary

The City of Waukesha seeks a Building Inspector to perform interior and exterior inspections of residential and commercial properties to ensure compliance with City, State and Federal building codes. The role involves analyzing property conditions and coordinating enforcement actions in the City of Waukesha.

Job description

This position is responsible for performing interior and exterior inspections of residential and commercial properties for compliance with all applicable City, State and Federal building codes, ordinances and statutes related to the use, occupancy and maintenance of properties within the City of Waukesha.

Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00-4:30 (with flexibility)

Salary Range: $61,862.60 - $74,306.26

This position is responsible for performing interior and exterior inspections of residential and commercial properties for compliance with all applicable City, State and Federal building codes, ordinances and statutes related to the use, occupancy and maintenance of properties within the City of Waukesha.

Essential Job Functions

1. Conducts inspections of properties to check and confirm compliance with health and safety codes, ordinances and statutes.
2. Conducts inspections in response to citizen complaints, aldermanic requests or information provided by other inspectors.
3. Conducts inspections for compliance with the City ordinances including, public nuisance, zoning, public health and welfare, building, signs, property maintenance, and all local and adopted building codes.
4. Enforces code provisions by preparing and processing contact letters, orders to correct conditions and issuance of citations; charges reinspection fees as warranted.
5. Initiates contact with tenants, landlords and property owners regarding code violations, maintenance issues and other problems associated with inspection duties.
6. Tracks active code enforcement cases and enters inspection results with narrative into the computer system.
7. Inspects rooming houses to ensure code and license compliance.
8. Reviews certificate of occupancy for each establishment with a liquor license to ensure code compliance.
9. Assists other inspectors as needed and as certification allows.
10. Maintains a thorough knowledge of modern inspection methods and procedures.
11. Collects and manages evidence related to enforcement actions.
12. Testifies in court as necessary regarding enforcement actions.
13. Inspects properties for compliance with the City Zoning Ordinance, City Planning requirements and Plan Commission requirements as it relates to Certificate of Occupancy.
14. Creates zoning compliance letters as requested.
15. Conducts permit and plan reviews as assigned.
16. Provides effective and efficient customer service and promotes and maintains responsive community relations.
17. Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge of

• Modern property inspection methods and procedures.
• All City, State and Federal building codes, ordinances and statutes related to the use, occupancy and maintenance of residential and commercial properties.
• Occupational hazards and safety methods and procedures used to minimize and avoid risks.
• The use of general office equipment including computers and related software.

Necessary Special Requirements

Required: Valid Wisconsin driver's license; Wisconsin Uniform Dwelling Code - Construction Inspector Certification; and UDC HVAC inspector certification must be obtained within 18 months of hire

Preferred: Wisconsin Commercial Building Inspector Certification, UDC electrical, and UDC plumbing
