Job summary

City of St. Joseph is seeking a Property Maintenance Inspector to enforce city ordinances regarding minimum housing, property maintenance, solid waste, and zoning. This position involves field surveys, inspections of occupied housing for code violations, and issuing summonses where needed.

The role requires interaction with the public and the ability to testify in court when required. Education includes a high school diploma or equivalent, with an associate’s degree preferred.

Qualifications

• Requires a High School diploma or equivalent; an Associate’s degree is preferred.
• Ability to enforce city ordinances with focus on property maintenance, housing, zoning and waste.
• Experience or ability to issue summonses and testify in court as needed.
• Knowledge of city streets, codes and regulations or ability to learn them within six months.
• Requires a valid driver’s license and the ability to operate a City vehicle.

Responsibilities

• Enforces city ordinances regarding minimum housing and property maintenance.
• Inspects occupied housing units for International Property Maintenance Code violations and tags unsafe properties.
• Issues summonses for violations and testifies in court as necessary.
• Researches real estate records to locate property owners of violations.
• Directs towing of junk vehicles when necessary and conducts mosquito control activities.
• Interacts with the public to educate and achieve future compliance.
