Nationwide is searching for a Property Risk Engineer to join our property/casualty loss control team. The candidate should have large property experience. This is a field engineering role with a heavy emphasis on food manufacturing accounts. In this role, you will be performing risk management surveys to document COPE features of property and delivering risk management services with insureds to positively impact their loss experience. This is a work from home role, ideally positioned in California. We will also consider candidates domiciled in Nevada and Arizona. The role has expected travel of 30%.

Experience Needed For This Role

In-depth knowledge of process protection for hazards typically found in food manufacturing industries, including combustible dust processes, ammonia refrigeration systems, warehousing, industrial scale cooking, and product drying operations.

Ability to apply appropriate NFPA Standards to evaluate the adequacy of fire protection systems, special suppression systems, water supplies, and inspection, testing, and maintenance (ITM) programs.

Job Description Summary

If you are a consultant at heart, with an interest in the food and agriculture industry and the desire to learn and use your knowledge to improve operations and reduce potential loss, we want to hear from you!

Our agribusiness risk management team develops relationships with customers, performs property control surveys, and recommends improvements to decrease risk. You will provide high-level consulting to Risk Management, Claims, Underwriting, and Marketing on risk assessment of high-value property exposures, and also serve as an external consultant to clients regarding property exposures during design and construction phases.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Perform COPE surveys on prospective and renewal business with large property exposures or unique hazards, analyzing risks and hazards.
  2. Recommend risk management programs and training to prevent and mitigate property risk.
  3. Provide services such as thermal imaging, sprinkler analysis, and engineering review, reporting anomalies and recommending solutions.
  4. Demonstrate technical expertise in property exposures and fire protection, supporting safety management activities.
  5. Research and assess risks, analyze statistical data, and prioritize clients/exposures of concern.
  6. Develop and revise risk management and underwriting property guidelines.
  7. Maintain affiliations with industry organizations to stay current with trends and market conditions.
  8. Assist sales efforts by presenting information on loss control services and help clients develop risk reduction strategies.

Reporting Relationships: Reports to Manager, Director, or Associate Vice President. No direct reports.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science in structural, mechanical, fire protection, or agricultural engineering.
  • Licensed Professional Engineer or relevant professional designations (e.g., CPCU, ARM, CFPS, CSSP, LEED).
  • Eight years of engineering or loss control experience, including property assessments.
  • Knowledge of PML evaluations, building systems, NFPA, IBC, and ASCE codes.
  • Effective communication skills, ability to train and consult, and decision-making capabilities.

Work Conditions: Must be able to conduct physical inspections, climb, bend, crawl, lift up to 50 lbs., and travel as needed. Valid driver’s license required.
