Job summary

Ashurst Perkins Coie LLP, a leading international law firm, seeks an Energy Transactions Associate in Madison, WI. The role involves negotiating complex power purchase agreements and advising on market design, FERC matters, and federal energy policy.

Ideal candidates will have 3–6 years of energy law experience, JD from an accredited school, and be admitted to practice in the local jurisdiction. Compensation ranges with benefits and discretionary bonus are available.

Qualifications

  • 3–6 years of experience in energy law (regulatory and transactional).
  • Familiarity with the Federal Power Act, power market mechanics, and power transaction structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft bespoke energy contracts.
  • JD from an accredited law school.
  • Must be admitted to practice (or eligible to waive) in the jurisdiction of the office location.

Responsibilities

  • Power Transactions: negotiate sophisticated power purchase agreements and energy service agreements for developers, utilities, and buyers.
  • Market Design & RTO/ISOs: advise on electric market design issues within RTOs/ISOs (PJMs, MISO, SPP, ERCOT, CAISO).
  • FERC regulatory: represent clients before FERC and advise on market-based rate programs and interlocks.
  • Federal energy policy: counsel on energy policy, renewable integration, and carbon-free procurement strategies.

Scope Of Work Includes
  • Power Transactions: negotiate sophisticated power purchase agreements and custom energy service agreements on behalf of developers, utilities and corporate buyers (including some of the world’s largest technology companies and data center developers).
  • Market Design & RTO/ISOs: advise on complex electric market design issues within RTOs/ISOs (with a particular emphasis on PJM, MISO, SPP, ERCOT and CAISO), including capacity market mechanisms, large load and generator interconnection policies, and market participation.
  • FERC regulatory: represent clients in high-stakes proceedings before the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and advise on compliance with respect to market-based rate programs, qualifying facilities and exempt wholesale generators, interlocks, etc.
  • Federal energy policy: counsel clients on emerging energy policy, renewable energy integration, and carbon‑free energy procurement strategies.
Ideal Candidate
  • 3-6 years of experience in energy law, preferably with a mix of regulatory and transactional experience
  • Familiarity with the Federal Power Act, power market mechanics, and power transaction structures.
  • Demonstrated ability to draft bespoke energy contracts
  • JD from accredited law school
  • Must be admitted to practice (or eligible to waive in) to the jurisdiction of office location.
