Job summary

S. B. Ballard Construction Company is seeking an experienced Construction Surveyor to join our on-site team in the Virginia Beach area. The role focuses on accurate project layout, field verification, and precise as-built documentation from start to finish.

The ideal candidate has at least 3 years of surveying experience, strong knowledge of staking, topographic surveys, and field calculations, and proficiency with Total Stations, GPS, and AutoCAD. Travel to multiple project sites is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• 3 years surveying experience.
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Experience using Total Stations, survey levels, and related field equipment.

Responsibilities

• Perform construction staking and layout for commercial projects.
• Verify survey control, dimensions, elevations, and project layout.
• Complete field calculations for layout, grades, and material quantities.
• Prepare accurate as-built documentation and reports.
• Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Utilize Total Stations, GPS, and AutoCAD to support project layout and documentation.
• Review project drawings and calculations to ensure field accuracy.
• Communicate layout information clearly with project teams.
• Attend project meetings and provide progress updates.

We are seeking an experienced Construction Surveyor to join our growing team. This position plays a vital role in ensuring the accuracy of project layout, field verification, and as-built documentation from project start through completion. What You'll Do

As a Construction Surveyor, you will:

• Perform construction staking and layout for commercial construction projects.
• Verify survey control, dimensions, elevations, and project layout.
• Complete field calculations for layout, grades, and material quantities.
• Prepare accurate as-built documentation and reports.
• Interpret construction drawings, specifications, and contract documents.
• Total Stations
• GPS Survey Equipment (preferred)
• Utilize AutoCAD and survey-related software to support project layout and documentation.
• Review project drawings and calculations to ensure field accuracy.
• Prepare technical calculations, reports, sketches, and documentation.
• Communicate layout information clearly with project teams.
• Work closely with Project Managers, Superintendents, Quality Control Managers, and field personnel.
• Attend project meetings and provide progress updates.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 3 years of surveying experience, preferably within commercial construction.
• Working knowledge of construction surveying principles including:
• Layout and staking
• Topographic surveys
• Field calculations
• Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
• Experience using Total Stations, survey levels, and related field equipment.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
• Valid driver's license.
• Ability to work independently while maintaining excellent communication with project teams.

Preferred

• Associate or bachelor's degree in surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field.
• Experience with GPS layout systems.
• AutoCAD and survey software proficiency.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently stand, walk, and use hands and arms throughout the workday.
• Occasionally sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Frequently lift up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds.
• Work outdoors in varying weather conditions and travel between project locations.
