Job summary

Haydon is seeking a Project Superintendent to lead field operations on water and wastewater construction projects, including treatment plants, pump stations, and pipelines. You will coordinate crews, subcontractors, and engineers to deliver projects safely, on time, and within budget.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management or Civil Engineering is preferred.
  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience, with significant water/wastewater infrastructure exposure.
  • 7+ years of field supervision experience on related projects.
  • Proficiency with construction management software such as Viewpoint, HCSS, Bluebeam, Primavera P6 or similar.
  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional certifications (e.g., Excavation Competent Person, Confined Space, NCCCO) are preferred.

JOB PURPOSE / POSITION OVERVIEW

The Project Superintendent provides overall field leadership for Haydon’s water and wastewater construction projects, including treatment facilities, pump stations, lift stations, and pipeline infrastructure. This role is responsible for coordinating daily field operations, maintaining safety and quality standards, managing project schedules, and directing crews and subcontractors to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in accordance with Haydon standards and client expectations.

The Project Superintendent oversees day-to-day construction activities and serves as a key point of coordination between field operations, Project Managers, subcontractors, engineers, and other project stakeholders. Projects may include water and wastewater treatment plants, pump and lift stations, large-diameter water and sewer pipelines, deep excavations, process piping systems, reinforced concrete structures, underground utilities, and live-system tie-ins. The Project Superintendent is responsible for planning and coordinating field activities, monitoring progress, addressing field issues, and maintaining efficient project execution from mobilization through completion.

We are seeking a driven Project Superintendent to lead and oversee day-to-day field operations for water and wastewater construction projects. DUTIES / RESPONSIBILITIES
Field Leadership & Execution
  • Lead and coordinate day-to-day field operations from project mobilization through completion and closeout.
  • Develop and manage 3-week look-ahead schedules and coordinate with the Project Manager to maintain alignment with the overall project schedule.
  • Oversee site logistics and complex construction activities, including deep excavations, shoring, dewatering, bypass pumping, crane operations, traffic control, and underground utility installation.
  • Plan and coordinate shutdowns, tie-ins, and live-system work to minimize disruptions and maintain safe, efficient construction operations.
  • Monitor field productivity, crew performance, and progress while implementing corrective actions to maintain project schedule, quality, and cost objectives.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports and field documentation, including labor, equipment, production quantities, site conditions, delays, and project issues.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager on cost control, manpower planning, procurement, scheduling, forecasting, and coordination of long-lead materials and equipment.
Quality Control & Technical Oversight
  • Ensure construction activities are performed in accordance with contract documents, plans, specifications, applicable AWWA/ASTM standards, and Haydon quality requirements.
  • Coordinate required inspections, testing, and quality control activities with owners, engineers, inspectors, subcontractors, and field teams.
  • Review plans, specifications, submittals, shop drawings, and RFIs with the Project Manager and project engineers to identify potential field impacts and constructability concerns.
  • Proactively identify and resolve field conflicts, design discrepancies, and constructability issues to minimize impacts to schedule, cost, and quality.
  • Maintain accurate as-built records, field documentation, testing records, and project turnover packages throughout construction.
Client & Stakeholder Communication
  • Serve as a primary on-site point of contact for owners, inspectors, engineers, and other project representatives, ensuring clear and timely communication.
  • Participate in and lead field coordination meetings with subcontractors, trade partners, project teams, and other stakeholders to maintain alignment on project activities and priorities.
  • Represent Haydon professionally and maintain strong working relationships with clients, subcontractors, inspectors, and project stakeholders.
  • Support coordination with municipalities, agencies, and surrounding communities during traffic impacts, shutdowns, bypass operations, tie-ins, and other activities that may affect the public or existing systems.
  • Monitor field labor, manpower, equipment, and material utilization to support project budget and productivity goals.
  • Track production and progress against project schedules, identify potential impacts, and implement corrective actions to maintain milestones.
  • Identify opportunities to improve field productivity, reduce costs, and minimize waste without compromising safety or quality.
  • Support the Project Manager with change order documentation, field quantities, production information, and pricing inputs.
  • Maintain accountability for schedule commitments and coordinate resources to ensure work progresses efficiently and in accordance with project requirements.
  • Lead and coordinate Foremen, craft employees, subcontractors, and field personnel to ensure safe, productive, and efficient project execution.
  • Mentor and develop field team members while promoting accountability, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Support performance management by providing feedback, documenting performance concerns, and recognizing strong performance.
  • Collaborate with the Project Manager on workforce planning, manpower forecasting, and resource allocation.
  • Promote strong communication and collaboration between field and office teams to maintain alignment on project goals, schedules, safety, and quality.
  • Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent combination of education and relevant construction experience will be considered.
  • 10+ years of heavy civil construction experience, with significant experience in water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • 7+ years of field supervisory experience on water/wastewater treatment facilities, pump stations, lift stations, large-diameter pipelines, or related municipal infrastructure projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage field operations, manpower, equipment, productivity, schedules, and project costs.
  • Strong leadership, communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills with the ability to coordinate multiple crews and subcontractors.
  • Proficiency with construction and project management software such as Viewpoint, HCSS, Bluebeam, Primavera P6, or similar platforms.
  • OSHA 30 certification required; additional certifications such as Excavation Competent Person, Confined Space, or NCCCO are preferred.
PREFERRED EXPERIENCE
  • Experience overseeing water and wastewater construction projects, including treatment facilities, pump stations, lift stations, large-diameter pipelines, underground utilities, or municipal infrastructure.
  • Experience with construction management, scheduling, and project controls software such as HCSS, Bluebeam, Procore, Viewpoint, Primavera P6, or similar platforms.
  • Experience working with municipal owners, inspectors, engineers, subcontractors, and regulatory agencies on complex infrastructure projects.
  • Experience with self-perform construction, major utility tie-ins, bypass pumping, deep excavation, and other complex field operations is a plus.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORKING CONDITIONS (environment, noise level, public interactions)
  • Ability to work in active construction environments and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk uneven terrain and navigate active jobsites, including frequent standing, walking, bending, climbing, and working around construction equipment and excavation areas.
  • Regular presence in both field and office environments, with ability to travel between project sites, client meetings, and other project-related locations.
