Job summary

Knife River is seeking a Project Superintendent for its Texas Bryan area project. The role involves supervising all project personnel, coordinating with subcontractors and owners, and ensuring timely, on-budget completion in accordance with plans and safety policies.

The position requires extensive field leadership, strong communication, and the ability to manage schedules, costs, and safety across the build site. Overtime and variable hours are expected.

Qualifications

  • Seven or more years' experience in construction including Earthwork, Concrete Paving, Underground Pipe, and related coordination.
  • Five years DOT experience as a Project Superintendent.
  • Familiarity with MS Office Programs, HCSS, Heavy Job.
  • Clean driving record and pass background checks.
  • Willingness to work overtime and in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise Knife River personnel and subcontractors to maximize effectiveness.
  • Coordinate work with owners, subcontractors, and site teams to follow plans and schedules.
  • Monitor progress, budgets, and costs; implement corrective actions.
  • Oversee Health and Safety Plan compliance for all personnel on site.
  • Maintain project forecast: materials, equipment, staffing, and subcontractor schedules.
  • Review project logs and communicate issues and proposed solutions to the project manager.
  • Interface with Owner's personnel and project representatives daily.
  • Ensure plans, specs, addenda, and submittals are understood and followed.
  • Assist in summarizing monthly payments and ensure timely billing.
  • Control costs and avoid overruns; complete timecards and documentation.

ROLE OVERVIEW:

The basic function of the Project Superintendent is to effectively supervise all aspects of the Knife River construction project, employees, subcontractors, and to ensure that all aspects of the project are coordinated and completed in a timely, efficient, effective and profitable manner.


Typical schedule is Monday - Friday 6:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Saturday as needed.


DUTIES AND/OR RESPONSIBILITIES (summary of components that make up the job)
  1. Manages, supervises and schedules all of Knife River Corporations personnel on the project as well as all subcontractors, equipment and materials in a manner that maximizes their effectiveness.
  2. Communicates with Knife River personnel and sub-contractors to ensure they understand the work, the planned approach and any problem areas (with a back-up plan.)
  3. Continually monitors progress on the project as it relates to schedules, personnel and costs.
  4. Oversees the implementation of the Knife River Corporation Health and Safety Plan for all personnel (KRC employees, Subcontractors, and Visitors.)
  5. Maintains and updates the project forecast to ensure that: All materials have been ordered and will be delivered on time; All equipment needed has been requisitioned on a timely basis; All necessary Knife River personnel and equipment have been scheduled; All sub-contractors have been contacted to confirm schedules.
  6. Reviews Project Logs continuously and identifies any issues which might affect the project.
  7. Communicates with the project manager all issues and the proposed actions to resolve the problem.
  8. Successfully interacts with the Owner's personnel and Project Representative on a daily basis.
  9. Understands all of the contractual obligations of the plans, specifications, addendums and submittals for their project.
  10. Assists the Project Manager in summarizing the monthly payment requisition within the required timeframe to ensure timely billing and payment.
  11. Reviews weekly job costs to keep the project within budget; Notifies Project Manager as soon as a cost overrun is identified.
  12. Takes appropriate action (in conjunction with the Project Manager) to minimize the costs associated with the overrun.
  13. Must complete and cost code timecards and invoice slips, document additional work and back charges, maintain accurate as-built drawings.
  14. Complies with all policies and procedures of Knife River Corporation.
  15. Extensive knowledge of the general construction industry and the sub trades.
  16. Ability to complete projects safely, on budget, on time and on spec.
  17. Perform other duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (types and extent of knowledge, skills or abilities an incumbent must possess to complete the job responsibilities satisfactorily)
  1. Ability to schedule workers, subcontractors and suppliers to ensure project stays on schedule.
  2. Ability to supervise construction projects effectively and efficiently.
  3. Ability to identify, troubleshoot and resolve problems on projects before they become major issues.
  4. Attention to detail is critical.
  5. Projects are in compliance with the company's Safety and Health Manual.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS (minimum educational, experience, or other relevant job requirements)
  1. Seven or more years' experience in areas of Construction includes but not limited to Earthwork, Concrete Paving, Underground Pipe, MSE Walls, Asphalt Paving, Base Courses, Soil Stabilization and Project Coordination with Engineers, Owners, and Project Managers.
  2. Five years DOT experience as a Project Superintendent.
  3. Familiarity with MS Office Programs, HCSS, Heavy Job.
  4. Must meet employment standards with regards to background/MVR check with clean driving record.
  5. Must be able to work overtime and be flexible with hours (daytime/nighttime).
  6. Ability to work outside in all seasons.
