Job summary

The Christman Company in Grand Rapids seeks a Project Safety Manager to lead safety efforts on high-profile commercial construction projects. Based in our West Michigan office, you will mentor teams, enforce regulatory compliance, and promote a proactive safety culture across job sites.

You will conduct audits, analyze trends, and partner with clients and subcontractors to prevent incidents while advancing safety certifications and best practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Safety, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of commercial construction safety experience; or equivalent education and experience.
• CSP (Certified Safety Professional) or CIH (Certified Industrial Hygienist) preferred, or ability to obtain.

Responsibilities

• Serve as a safety leader, fostering a proactive safety culture throughout the project lifecycle.
• Provide mentorship and coaching to project teams and subcontractors on safety standards, regulations, and best practices.
• Collaborate with clients and trade partners to support safe work environments.
• Identify, evaluate, and control potential hazards in pre-construction planning and active job sites.
• Conduct site audits, monitor safety performance, and implement corrective actions as needed.
• Investigate incidents and develop strategies to prevent recurrence.
• Track and analyze safety data to identify trends and drive continuous improvement.
• Contribute to corporate initiatives to enhance company-wide safety practices, tools, and technologies.

The position is often exposed to sounds and loud noises, such as construction equipment. The job requires the wearing of protective equipment when on the construction site (hardhats, safety glasses, and highly visible clothing). Temperatures and conditions may vary depending on the weather and seasons.
