Position Summary

The primary responsibility of the Phlebotomist is collecting and processing blood samples (e.g., centrifuging in the lab, performing aliquots on-site) as well as proper labeling and adherence to biosafety procedures. The Phlebotomist may also be asked to collect other physical measurements such as blood pressure, height, weight, and hip/waist measures, record vital signs and medical histories, prepare patients for examination, and draw blood. The position ensures compliance with applicable policies and regulations.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification as a phlebotomist.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
  • Certification as a phlebotomist (e.g., completion of phlebotomy training)
  • Demonstrated proficiency in successful blood collection, including with difficult veins.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to implement procedures in compliance with research protocols.

Physical Demands
  • Lift, carry, and transport phlebotomy supplies (up to 10 lbs).
Responsibilities

Conduct research phlebotomies in lab setting.

  • Perform blood draws (visits typically take place in the afternoons/early evenings).
  • Centrifuge blood.
  • Perform aliquots on-site.
  • Label samples and complete documentation.
  • Adhere to biosafety procedures.

Attend training and periodic project meetings.

  • Complete mandatory online trainings (e.g., Human Subjects/CITI, Blood Safety, UGA required trainings).
  • Complete project specific training and re-trainings as needed on study protocols.

Percentage of time: 95% duties; 5% training.

  • Driving is a responsibility of this position.
  • This is a position of trust.
  • This position does not have operation, access, or control of financial resources.
  • This position does not require a P-Card.
  • Direct interaction or care of children under 18 or direct patient care is required.
  • Security Access (public safety, IT security, personnel records, patient records, or access to chemicals and medications) is required.
