Description

This position is responsible for providing direct project management for the Substation Engineering team located in the South Central Region. The goal of the position is to directly manage multiple projects across multiple clients and grow the T&D business in a dynamic and profitable manner based upon Burns & McDonnell's core values of safety, client satisfaction, commitment, dedication, integrity, and overall outstanding service. This position provides a unique opportunity to directly manage projects, provide leadership to the project team, support regional growth of the substation group, and provide key input into long-term business planning as well as the future vision of the organization.

The Project Manager will be at the forefront of continued T&D growth. Burns & McDonnell’s T&D engineering business has grown significantly in our South Central Region. Based on this successful growth, opportunities, and available resources, Burns & McDonnell is strategically seeking a highly motivated Project Manager and leader to execute substation projects in this region and assist in the continued development and growth of our team.

The candidate is an engineering project manager with design experience in substations and related fields, extensive industry experience, and strong leadership ability. The candidate has a strong working knowledge of project financials, scope, schedule, and risk management with a history of success. The ideal candidate should be able to manage substation projects for major accounts with large multi-disciplinary teams.

Major responsibilities for the Project Manager will include:
  • Responsible for planning, budgeting and establishing/achieving critical project objectives.
  • Responsible for the overall success of projects (safety, quality, and profitability).
  • Provide management of engineering projects from concept to completion with a basic understanding of siting, permitting, planning, bid phase services, procurement, constructability reviews, and material management.
  • Work closely with the Project Team to confirm deliverables and services are being provided to client’s satisfaction.
  • Identify project opportunities early and facilitate go/no-go decisions, determine project fees, write proposals, prepare and lead client presentations, and negotiate contracts.
  • Support development and maintenance of business plan; lead and support proposal efforts to support profitable growth.
  • Demonstrate creativity, foresight and mature judgment in anticipating and solving problems.
  • Responsible for internal project financials, staffing, legal coordination, and risk management.
  • Develop and implement project policies and procedures, establish and/or reinforce project controls systems.
  • Report regularly on progress, cost, profit, schedule, design questions, project risks, and any issues requiring support.
Additional responsibilities for the Project Manager may include:
  • Account management as a local point of contact for key clients in the region.
  • Conduct quality reviews on substation design projects (physical or P&C) as needed.
  • Provide feedback on staff performance to Department Manager and work with Department Manager to assign project opportunities to support staff development goals.
  • Collaborate with other Project Managers across Regional and/or Branch Offices and mentor Project Managers in Training (PMITs).
  • Assist with recruitment, development and retention of staff and mentor staff for division growth.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor Degree in engineering, construction management or related degree from accredited program and 7 years applicable experience
  • Prior experience on construction project sites or executing program management in the industries of aviation, commercial, energy, government, manufacturing, oil & gas, process, transmission & distribution, or water is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding work environment, ability to work overtime on short notice.
  • Excellent computer skills and proficiency using Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work collaboratively with others (owners, contractors, engineers, designers) in a multi-disciplined project team environment to resolve design or drawing issues as appropriate and to accomplish objectives.
  • Strong experience with document control, scheduling, cost control and project management software
  • Ability to thoughtfully and positively influence, lead, and manage change. Must possess strong project management skills and a strategic perspective.
  • Must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to clearly and effectively present complex information to all levels of employees, management, and clients.
  • Ability to travel. Valid driver's license required. In addition, must meet standards to qualify for and maintain the Company's vehicle driving privileges as outlined in the Company's Motor Vehicle Safety Policy.
Preferred qualifications
  • 10 years of engineering design and engineering project management experience.
  • Professional Engineering license strongly preferred
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or advanced degree in engineering/construction management.
