The Project Manager is responsible for coordinating multiple structural and miscellaneous steel projects from contract award through fabrication, delivery, installation, and closeout. The role ensures that work is executed in accordance with contract documents, approved shop drawings, field conditions, project schedules, company capabilities, safety requirements, and established financial targets.

The Project Manager serves as a primary point of coordination between customers, design professionals, detailers, vendors, fabrication personnel, field crews, and internal management.

1. CONTRACT & PROJECT ADMINISTRATION
  • Review awarded contracts in detail and identify key commercial, technical, scheduling, and administrative requirements.
  • Present significant contract requirements and concerns to company leadership and coordinate necessary revisions or clarifications with the customer.
  • Review project insurance requirements and communicate applicable obligations to the Accounting team.
  • Work with customers to resolve or modify contract and insurance provisions when necessary.
  • Identify changes in scope and other conditions that may result in additional cost or schedule impacts.
  • Develop pricing and documentation for change order proposals, including impacts associated with materials, coatings, detailing, transportation, shop labor, field labor, equipment, and schedule.
  • Negotiate and finalize project changes with customers as authorized.
  • Monitor project expenditures against established budgets for labor, materials, subcontractors, equipment, and overhead.
  • Prepare and submit AIA payment applications and required supporting documentation, including certified payroll reports, union documentation, and other project-specific requirements.
  • Track payment application status and follow up with customers regarding outstanding approvals or documentation.
2. ENGINEERING, DETAILING & SUBMITTALS
  • Conduct a thorough review of project specifications and identify requirements affecting materials, finishes, fabrication, installation, and submittals.
  • Summarize significant specification requirements for company leadership and the project team.
  • Communicate applicable project requirements to steel detailers before issuing detailing contracts or purchase orders.
  • Coordinate the detailing process and manage the preparation of shop drawings for multiple projects.
  • Review shop drawings for completeness and general conformance with contract documents and design intent before submission.
  • Submit drawings for approval, track review status, and coordinate revisions through final approval.
  • Verify that comments from engineers, architects, and other reviewing parties are incorporated into drawings used for fabrication and field installation.
  • Prepare and submit Requests for Information (RFIs) as required to resolve incomplete, conflicting, or unclear design information.
  • Develop and submit Site-Specific Safety Plans when required by the project.
  • Visit project sites to verify dimensions and existing conditions when field measurements are required.
  • Prepare field sketches and other documentation necessary to clearly communicate site conditions.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, and contractors to resolve differences between design documents and actual field conditions.
  • Recommend practical design or coordination modifications that improve fabrication and erection efficiency while maintaining project requirements.
  • Maintain regular communication with detailers throughout the drawing and approval process.
3. PROCUREMENT & MATERIAL CONTROL
  • Prepare purchase orders for structural steel, miscellaneous metals, hardware, specialty materials, and other items necessary to complete assigned projects.
  • Place orders with approved suppliers and vendors in accordance with project requirements.
  • Track purchased materials and equipment from order placement through delivery.
  • Maintain appropriate receiving and delivery documentation.
  • Review vendor invoices against purchase orders and received materials before forwarding approved invoices to Accounting.
  • Monitor material lead times and proactively address potential procurement issues that could affect fabrication or installation schedules.
4. FABRICATION COORDINATION
  • Prepare and release shop work packages in sufficient time to support the required fabrication schedule.
  • Provide fabrication personnel with the drawings, material lists, cutting information, and supporting documentation necessary to execute the work.
  • Coordinate material, equipment, hardware, and supply availability to minimize interruptions to shop production.
  • Conduct fabrication kickoff meetings with the Shop Foreman and Operations Manager as required.
  • Monitor fabrication progress for assigned projects and communicate priorities, changes, and schedule requirements to shop personnel.
  • Coordinate closely with shop management to resolve fabrication questions and maintain accurate information flow between the project team and production personnel.
5. CLIENT RELATIONS & PROJECT COORDINATION
  • Serve as a primary project contact for customers throughout the execution of assigned work.
  • Provide customers with realistic updates regarding fabrication progress, delivery dates, installation schedules, and project milestones.
  • Coordinate with Operations and project leadership to provide progress photographs and other requested project updates.
  • Develop and maintain project schedules based on required activities, dependencies, contract milestones, fabrication capacity, and field conditions.
  • Coordinate deliveries to support efficient fabrication and erection operations.
  • Establish and maintain professional working relationships with customers, general contractors, owners, architects, engineers, and other project stakeholders.
  • Attend required project and site coordination meetings.
  • Coordinate steel work with other trades through regular communication with the General Contractor and project team.
  • Identify potential schedule conflicts early and work with the appropriate parties to develop practical solutions.
6. FIELD INSTALLATION & STEEL ERECTION
  • Coordinate field installation activities for assigned projects with the Field Operations Manager and project leadership.
  • Confirm that required daily reports are maintained, including work performed, manpower, equipment usage, site conditions, delays, safety talks, and relevant project issues.
  • Coordinate ironworker manpower based on project schedules, available resources, fabrication progress, and field readiness.
  • Establish practical delivery and erection sequences to support efficient use of labor and equipment.
  • Coordinate crane permits, street closures, access requirements, and other logistical needs associated with field operations.
  • Plan installation activities with consideration for productivity, safety, sequencing, schedule commitments, and budget constraints.
  • Complete or coordinate required accident and incident documentation and respond to customer-specific safety requirements.
  • Monitor quality throughout installation to ensure work is accurate, meets project requirements, and is prepared for required inspections.
  • Coordinate corrective work when field conflicts or quality issues are identified.
  • Manage punch-list completion in coordination with General Contractors, inspectors, and field personnel.
7. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & ADDITIONAL WORK
  • Identify opportunities for additional work arising from existing projects and customer relationships.
  • Assist with estimating and developing proposals for new opportunities associated with current customers.
  • Promptly identify potential additions or modifications to project scope and communicate associated cost and schedule impacts.
  • Support long-term customer relationships that can lead to repeat business and future project opportunities.
8. PERFORMANCE & ACCOUNTABILITY

The Project Manager is responsible for the overall commercial and operational performance of assigned projects and is expected to actively support the profitability objectives established at project award.

Key areas of accountability include:

  • Maintaining targeted project gross profit.
  • Managing project-related staff and administrative costs relative to overall project costs.
  • Controlling material, fabrication, field labor, subcontractor, equipment, and other project expenditures.
  • Identifying financial and scheduling risks early and taking appropriate corrective action.
  • Maintaining strong customer relationships that support repeat business.
  • Maintaining clear, timely, and accurate communication with fabrication and shop management.
  • Delivering projects safely, efficiently, and in accordance with contractual and quality requirements.
