Job summary

Thomas & Hutton seeks a senior Water Resources Engineer to lead and grow our water resources practice in the Southeast. You will guide a growing team, manage complex projects for public and private clients, and collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals to deliver resilient infrastructure and sustainable stormwater solutions.

The role requires a Civil Engineering degree, 6+ years in water resources, strong hydrologic/hydraulic modeling, and leadership capabilities. PE preferred.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required.
  • PE license preferred for advancement and leadership.
  • 6+ years in water resources engineering.
  • Strong modeling and stormwater design experience.
  • Experience with green infrastructure and LID practices.
  • Erosion and sediment control design & permitting.
  • Ability to prepare plans, specs, and cost estimates.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, ArcMap, and hydrologic/hydraulic software.
  • Strong written and verbal communication for client interactions.
  • Ability to lead multiple projects and prioritize workflow.

Responsibilities

  • Lead water resources projects including stormwater master planning, drainage design, and 1D/2D modeling.
  • Oversee watershed studies, capital projects, and stormwater solutions.
  • Perform hydrologic/hydraulic analyses and drainage design.
  • Design stormwater systems and erosion control; support permitting.
  • Prepare contract docs: plans, specs, cost estimates.
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, regulators, and teams.
  • Manage scope, schedules, budgets; develop proposals and fees.
  • Oversee FEMA LOMCs and related studies.
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance.
  • Monitor progress to meet scope, schedule, and budget goals.

Job description

Lead impactful water resources projects where your work supports resilient infrastructure and sustainable stormwater solutions across the Southeast. At Thomas & Hutton, you’ll take ownership of complex projects, guide a growing team, and collaborate with multidisciplinary professionals to deliver high-quality solutions for public and private sector clients. If you’re an experienced engineer ready to lead, mentor, and expand a water resources practice, this role is for you.

What you'll do
  • Lead and manage water resources projects including stormwater master planning, drainage design, and hydrologic and hydraulic modeling
  • Oversee the development of watershed studies, capital improvement projects, and stormwater management solutions
  • Perform and manage hydrologic and hydraulic analyses (1D/2D modeling) and drainage design
  • Design and oversee stormwater management systems, erosion and sediment control plans, and NPDES permitting efforts
  • Develop and review contract documents including plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Coordinate with clients, contractors, consultants, regulatory agencies, and multidisciplinary teams
  • Manage project scope, schedules, and budgets, including proposal development and fee negotiations
  • Perform and oversee FEMA Letter of Map Changes and related studies
  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and technical guidance to team members
  • Monitor project progress to ensure alignment with scope, schedule, and budget goals
What you bring
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license preferred
  • 6+ years of experience in water resources engineering
  • Strong experience in hydrologic and hydraulic modeling and stormwater management design
  • Experience with green infrastructure and low impact development practices
  • Experience with erosion and sediment control design and permitting
  • Proficiency in preparing construction plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD, ArcMap, and hydrologic/hydraulic modeling software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to lead client interactions
  • Proven ability to manage multiple projects and appropriately prioritize workflow
  • Strong organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to mentor staff and lead a high-performing team
  • Ability to perform field work including lifting up to 25 pounds
