Job summary

Olson Engineering, Inc. seeks a Mechanical Engineering professional with a BS and extensive project engineering management experience in the chemical process industry. You will coordinate scope, schedules, and budgets across site teams and vendors to deliver capital projects safely and efficiently.

Responsibilities include reviewing design documents, ensuring compliance with plant standards and safety guidelines, and guiding cross-functional teams from concept through start-up.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in all phases of project engineering management from conceptual scope development, front end loading, gate reviews, equipment specification, design drawings, procurement, production design, construction, and start-up.
  • Knowledge of plant standards, project management tools, contracting, process safety management, contractor safety, and capital project accounting.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, technical, and management skills to foster positive and productive team and client work environment.
  • Will work with design contractor performing design and constructability upgrade reviews and executing capital designs for capital projects.
  • Must be able to assist with planning, scheduling, implementing, and resolving construction issues for all contractor field activities involving craft building trades including pipe, boilermaker, electrical, and civil.

  • Coordinate, plan, and monitor the construction phase of the project and maintain communications with construction, production, and plant engineering.

Position Overview

This position requires a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering and/or equivalent experience in the chemical process industry dealing with mechanical equipment specification and piping design. This position interfaces with levels of management up to and including the Site manager. Other contacts will be with members of the site project team and outside vendors. This position requires maintenance of communications with production and plant engineering to ensure all project activities fulfill requirements and incorporate up-to-date equipment as well as the most recent process improvements.

Responsibilities & Duties
  • Ensure the recommended scope of work meets the project objectives and design requirements. Review other alternatives to the submitted scope of work with the objective of accomplishing the desired outcome with a lower expenditure.
  • Ensure the cost estimate and design requirements are well defined and agreed to by production and plant engineering prior to submittal for capital funding.
  • Estimate the cost of the proposed project, author and/or compile the necessary documentation to obtain project approval in accordance with corporate approval policy.
  • Oversee the design of projects to ensure sound engineering practices are followed. Ensure that all Site standards and guidelines are followed as well as governmental requirements (OSHA, NIASH, etc.)
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of the project team during the execution of the overall project plan and schedule. Monitor compliance.
  • Review all documents (including process design calculations and equipment specifications) generated by the project team, customers, and suppliers to assure technical accuracy and commercial accountability.
  • Maintain communications with production and plant engineering to ensure all project activities fulfill requirements and incorporate up-to-date equipment as well as the most recent process improvements.
  • Coordinate with Engineering Services to assure resources are applied to each engineering task. Monitor the design to ensure a safe, operable, and cost-efficient installation.
  • Work with other service groups, such as purchasing and accounting, to ensure purchases and contracts are handled expeditiously and properly committed.
  • Coordinate, plan, and monitor the construction phase of the project. Maintain good communications with construction, production, and plant engineering to ensure the project meets all of the requirements. Monitor schedule and scope compliance.
  • Coordinate the effort to bring the records of a project to an as-built condition.
Experience & Knowledge Requirements
