Mechanical Process Engineering Leader
Position Overview
Lead a multi-disciplinary mechanical engineering team responsible for the mechanical aspects of process equipment, machinery and plant installations in heavy industrial chemical plant projects. The role combines hands‑on process mechanical design using SolidWorks, project management, vendor coordination, and technical leadership to deliver safe, code‑compliant, cost‑effective equipment and installations from concept through commissioning.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, mentor and coordinate a team of process and mechanical engineers and drafters to deliver mechanical design and technical documentation for chemical plant projects.
- Develop and review detailed mechanical and process equipment designs (pressure vessels, heat exchangers, pumps, compressors, piping supports, rotating equipment) using SolidWorks and related CAD tools.
- Collaborate with process engineers to translate process requirements into reliable mechanical solutions and specifications.
- Manage project scopes, schedules and budgets for mechanical deliverables; act as primary mechanical point of contact for project management and clients.
- Perform design reviews, calculations and engineering assessments to ensure compliance with applicable codes and standards (ASME, API, ANSI) and internal quality procedures.
- Prepare equipment specifications, procurement requisitions and evaluate vendor quotations; support vendor selection, fabrication oversight and factory acceptance testing.
- Provide construction and commissioning support including site inspections, mechanical installation guidance, field engineering and resolution of fabrication/installation issues.
- Implement and drive mechanical reliability, maintainability and safety best practices, including HAZOP follow-ups, mechanical integrity programs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coordinate with procurement, fabrication shops, QA/QC and contractors to ensure timely delivery and installation of mechanical systems.
- Produce and maintain engineering documents, drawings, BOMs and handover packages for turnover to operations and maintenance teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelors or Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent)
- Minimum 8+ years of mechanical engineering experience in heavy industrial, machinery, or chemical plant environments, with progressive leadership or lead-design responsibilities.
- Proven proficiency in SolidWorks for detailed equipment and assembly design and drawing production.
- Strong background in process design and process engineering interfaces; experience specifying and sizing pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, pressure vessels and rotating equipment.
- Demonstrated project management experience: managing scopes, schedules, budgets and cross‑functional teams
- Thorough knowledge of relevant design codes and standards (ASME, API, PED where applicable) and experience applying them in design and review.
- Hands‑on experience with machinery design, vendor management, fabrication oversight, shop tests and field commissioning.
- Excellent technical communication, client‑facing skills and the ability to translate complex mechanical concepts for multi‑disciplinary teams.
- Strong commitment to safety, quality and regulatory compliance, with experience in HAZOP, mechanical integrity and risk mitigation practices.
- Willingness to travel to project sites and vendor facilities as required.
