SALARY RANGE:$113,000 - 127,000

POSITION SUMMARY:
This position has full authority and responsibility for project profits and losses and manages all aspects of assigned ship repair projects. The individual provides primary customer interface throughout the project. Through project team members, manages the application of labor and materials to achieve timely, better-than-bid results and assure customer satisfaction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Plans, estimates, negotiates, staffs, directs the work, and reconciles final billings on assigned projects. As the top decision maker on the project, resolves any internal issues that arise over the productive, safe management of the project.
  • Meets or exceeds customers' expectations for quality, productivity, and safety on projects, managing the customer relationship through scope and price changes to ensure satisfaction and profitable closure.
  • Resolves issues daily with customers, owners, port authorities, and other interested parties. Represents the company fairly and consistently in interactions.
  • Works closely with the Contracting & Estimating Department to estimate, plan, execute, and settle projects. Provides documentation for bill settlement and change orders in a timely manner. Advises on opportunities to increase profits or avoid losses.
  • Interprets specifications, plans project sequencing, and coordinates project phases to prevent delays and rework. Ensures change order requests and CFRs are properly written and approved.
  • Documents each job accurately and contributes to final specifications.
  • Consults with supervision, project management, inspectors, and suppliers to resolve repair problems and improve methods.
  • Plans, coordinates, and directs production activities. Ensures appropriate staffing, audits reports, and monitors progress to meet requirements and bids, adjusting as needed.
  • Prepares management reports on progress, materials, and costs. Ensures adherence to work processes.
  • Maintains effective relationships with workers, customers, and contract administrators. Resolves labor disputes efficiently.
  • Leads post-project reviews, captures lessons learned, and applies them to future projects.
  • Monitors safety and environmental concerns, resolving issues proactively.
  • Assesses and documents team performance, providing feedback and development recommendations.
  • Remains technically current and supports productivity initiatives.
  • Reviews costs, quality, and internal capabilities versus subcontracting. Decides make or buy after analysis.
  • Manages subcontractor and vendor performance, setting expectations and monitoring standards.
  • Uses earned value management to forecast costs and report on performance.

JOB SCOPE:
Operates within general parameters, exercising sound judgment and decision-making. Manages projects from $0.5M to $20M, lasting 6 weeks or longer. Responsible for ensuring profitable performance and customer satisfaction, with P&L accountability.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Manages up to fifty employees directly or through supervisors, with varying expertise. May have up to four direct reports, operating at strategic and operational levels.

INTERPERSONAL CONTACTS:
Coordinates with managers and supervisors across the business unit, influencing and collaborating effectively. Represents the company externally with clients and industry peers.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Financial acumen related to labor-intensive projects.
  • Strong knowledge of ship systems and repair sequencing.
  • Ability to orchestrate labor use in complex, unionized environments.
  • Leadership skills including conflict resolution and decision-making.
  • Customer relationship management skills.
  • Excellent contract and print interpretation skills.
  • Effective communication skills across diverse audiences.
  • Negotiation skills to maximize project revenues and profits.
  • Ability to leverage informal leadership and maintain a proactive, ownership mindset.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
BS in a technical discipline or equivalent experience. Advanced degree preferred. Minimum five years of complex ship repair and project management experience, demonstrating success in planning, staffing, and executing multi-trade projects profitably.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Work in a dynamic, noisy shipyard environment. Ability to walk, climb, work in confined spaces, and lift up to 50 pounds. May require travel up to 5%. Reasonable accommodations available.
