Job summary

Cranbrook Educational Community in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, seeks a Project Manager – Capital Projects to serve as Owner’s Representative for design, new construction, renovation, and restoration on the 320‑acre National Historic Landmark campus.

The role coordinates architects, engineers, consultants, and contractors, manages budgets and schedules, and ensures historical integrity throughout construction, with emphasis on coordination among campus departments and external partners.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, construction management, mechanical engineering, or interior design.
  • Eight years of professional commercial/institutional project management experience.
  • Experience in renovation of historical structures.
  • Ability to read architectural drawings and technical specifications.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Define project scope, budgets and schedules.
  • Act as Owner's Representative coordinating designers, engineers and consultants.
  • Assist in selecting and retaining CM firms, general contractors and trades; pre-qualify and analyze bids.
  • Oversee budgets, cost control, and communication with Cranbrook representatives.
  • Coordinate construction activities and ensure schedule adherence while maintaining historical integrity.

Project Manager – Capital Projects

Cranbrook Educational Community is a leading educational center located in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, about 20 miles north of downtown Detroit.

This is a multiple incumbent position. Each Project Manager will be assigned projects based upon areas of expertise and experience. The role acts as the Owner’s Representative and manages design, new construction, renovation, and restoration projects for the 320-acre National Historic Landmark campus.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the planning of projects by defining scope that effectively fulfills program needs, establishes budgets and schedules.
  • Act as Owner's Representative, coordinating the work of designers, architects, engineers, and other consultants to ensure the completeness of construction plans and specifications.
  • Assist in selecting and retaining construction management firms, general contractors, and trades; pre‑qualify, develop bidder lists, analyze bids, and award contracts.
  • Perform supervisory administrative functions, including management of the Owner's contract(s), oversight of budget and project cost control, and communication of issues and coordination with outside professionals and Cranbrook representatives.
  • Coordinate construction activities, track and monitor construction progress through site supervision, facilitate dispute resolution, and ensure maintenance of the project schedule.
  • Coordinate with other Project Managers, Building Maintenance and Building Services Supervisors, Head of Archives, Director of the Center for Collections and Research, Schools Administration, and other staff to maintain and uphold the historical integrity of planned activities in construction projects and design and renovation of interior spaces.
  • Interact with Information Technology and Security Departments to ensure compliance of systems for new and existing buildings.
  • Administer project completion activities including punch list completion, completion of “as-built” drawings, and submission of maintenance and operations manuals and warranties.
Requirements
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Architecture, Construction Management, Mechanical Engineering, or Interior Design is required.
  • Eight years professional commercial/institutional project management experience required; engineering experience desirable. Equivalent combination of experience and education may substitute for minimum requirements.
  • Experience in renovation of historical structures is required.
  • Ability to prepare and interpret architectural drawings and technical specifications.
  • Working knowledge of architectural and engineering terminology, construction methods, building codes, asbestos abatement processes, cost estimating, manpower operations, and contractual procedures.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills to effectively communicate project directives, write reports, and engage in business correspondence.
