LJA Transportation is seeking a Project Engineer in Nashville to join our engineering team. You will design calculations, prepare plans, and develop schematic designs for TDOT, local government, and regional projects, applying advanced engineering principles with independent judgment within a supportive, employee-owned culture.

Ideal candidates bring 5+ years of experience with MicroStation, Geopak/Open Roads, and TDOT procedures, plus a PE license (TN preferred).

Qualifications

• BSCE degree and PE licensure, with TN preferred as starting point.
• Minimum 5+ years using MicroStation/Geopak/Open Roads and TDOT procedures.
• Strong verbal and written communication with internal teams and clients.

Responsibilities

• Perform design calculations, prepare plans, and direct schematic designs for TDOT/local projects.
• Apply advanced engineering principles and independent judgment on regional projects.
• Mentor direct reports and share knowledge with the team.
• Collaborate with executives, clients, and consultants to meet project goals.

POSITION OVERVIEW: As a Project Engineer at LJA Transportation, you will be responsible for design calculations, preparing plans, and developing schematic designs for TDOT, local government, and regional infrastructure projects while collaborating with team members, clients, and consultants. You’ll apply advanced engineering principles and exercise independent judgment - all while enjoying a supportive, team‑oriented culture.

A TYPICAL DAY MIGHT INCLUDE:

• Performing design calculations, preparing plans, and directing schematic designs for TDOT, local government, and other projects around the region.
• Using advanced techniques, theory, precepts, and practices.
• Interacting with task leaders, team members, clients, and other consultants.
• Exercising judgment in independently evaluating, selecting, and adapting standard techniques, procedures, and criteria.
• Mentoring direct reports, and conveying knowledge to others
• Team lunches/breakfasts and social activities

REQUIRED EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor of Science Degree, Civil Engineering
• Licensed as a Professional Engineer (Tennessee preferred as starting point)

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• 5+ years of experience with MicroStation, Geopak (or Open Roads) and TDOT procedures
• Effective communication skills to engage with other employee-owners.

IDEALLY, YOU SHOULD ALSO HAVE:

• Experience with Bentley ORD
• Experience with Large Scale TDOT Projects or Programs
• Experience and relationships with various TN cities and other agencies
• Advanced skills in specialized software programs
• Technical Training Experience
