Job summary

Flintco, a leader in construction services, seeks an early-career Project Engineer – Project Controls to build expertise in cost management, forecasting, and performance reporting on utility-scale solar projects.

The Project Engineer – Project Controls role is an early-career developmental role designed for an individual interested in building expertise in construction project controls within the utility-scale solar industry. Prior project controls or solar experience is not required. Through training, mentorship, project exposure, and progressively increasing responsibility, this position will develop skills in cost management, forecasting, progress measurement, production tracking, manpower analysis, and performance reporting. Working closely with Project Managers, Construction Managers, Superintendents, Project Engineers, Preconstruction, Finance, and Operations leadership, this position will help collect, maintain, and analyze project information related to cost, production, labor, and overall performance. The role provides an opportunity to develop an understanding of how accurate, forward-looking project data helps identify trends, manage risk, and support informed operational and financial decisions. As knowledge and proficiency grow, the individual will assume greater responsibility for project controls activities and reporting.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • • Learn and apply Flintco’s project controls processes, systems, reporting standards, and construction terminology.
  • • Assist project teams with cost tracking, forecasting, and Estimate at Completion (EAC) development.
  • • Track actual costs, committed costs, forecasted costs, and remaining costs against established project budgets.
  • • Help maintain the consistency, accuracy, and timeliness of project cost reporting.
  • • Support the development and maintenance of project progress, productivity, and production-tracking tools.
  • • Collect and organize project data used to measure performance against established project goals and expectations.
  • • Analyze project information, with guidance, to identify developing trends, potential risks, and areas requiring additional attention.
  • • Maintain historical project performance data to support future planning, estimating, and continuous improvement.
  • • Assist project and Operations leadership with staffing and manpower forecasting across one or more projects.
  • • Track pending and approved change orders and help document their effect on project budgets and forecasts.
  • • Assist in maintaining documentation supporting project cost impacts and change-order entitlement.
  • • Verify that approved changes are incorporated accurately into project budgets, forecasts, and reporting.
  • • Prepare and maintain reports that provide project and Operations leadership with visibility into cost, manpower, progress, productivity, risks, and opportunities.
  • • Support the development and maintenance of Power BI or similar project-reporting dashboards.
  • • Participate in project handoffs from Preconstruction to Operations and assist with establishing project controls processes after mobilization.
  • • Review estimate, production, labor, and cost assumptions with guidance from Project Controls, Preconstruction, and Operations leadership.
  • • Assist with developing projections based on actual project performance and emerging trends.
  • • Help develop historical benchmarks that improve future project planning, budgeting, and estimating.
  • • Maintain accurate cost and performance records throughout the project lifecycle.
  • • Support final cost analysis, project closeout reporting, and comparisons of final performance against original assumptions.
  • • Assist with documenting lessons learned related to project execution, productivity, manpower, and cost performance.
  • • Provide actual project performance information to Preconstruction and Estimating to help improve future project assumptions.
  • • Build effective working relationships with project, field, Finance, Preconstruction, and Operations team members.
  • • Participate in training, mentoring, and other development opportunities intended to build proficiency in project controls.
  • • Travel to project sites as required.
  • • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • • Zero to three years of professional, internship, co-op, or related project experience.
  • • Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, including the ability to organize and work with data.
  • • Ability to travel to project sites as required.
  • • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Engineering, Business, Finance, Accounting, Data Analytics, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
  • • Internship, co-op, academic, or professional exposure to construction, engineering, renewable energy, project management, finance, accounting, scheduling, or data analytics.
  • • Exposure to utility-scale solar, renewable energy, EPC, or large-scale construction projects.
  • • Familiarity with project cost tracking, scheduling, forecasting, production measurement, or financial analysis.
  • • Experience with Power BI or another data-visualization and reporting platform.
  • • Experience with an ERP, project management, or construction cost-management system.
  • • Advanced coursework or experience using Microsoft Excel.
