Job summary

CMM Optic in Troy, MI is seeking a Project Engineer to drive critical technical processes in the design and manufacture of optical components and systems. You will be the primary liaison between engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customers to ensure on-time, within-budget delivery and adherence to specifications.

The role requires hands-on experience with manufacturing and metrology, with a focus on Lean/Six Sigma and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related technical discipline.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Proficiency with parametric CAD for modeling and drafting.
  • Working understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5).
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

Responsibilities

  • Lead engineering projects from initial planning through final implementation.
  • Develop project schedules, milestones, budgets, and resource plans.
  • Coordinate cross-functional teams to ensure project objectives are achieved.
  • Review customer requirements, technical specifications, and contract documents.
  • Create and maintain engineering documentation, drawings, BOMs, work instructions, and design records.
  • Support design reviews, prototype builds, testing, validation, and production readiness.
  • Manage engineering change notifications (ECNs) and engineering change orders (ECOs).
  • Identify project risks and implement mitigation strategies.
  • Monitor project performance, costs, and schedules while providing regular status updates.
  • Collaborate with manufacturing to improve processes, reduce costs, and increase product quality.
  • Support supplier qualification, technical evaluations, and problem resolution.
  • Participate in root cause investigations and corrective/preventive actions.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable customer, industry, regulatory, and internal quality requirements.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives using Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma methodologies.
  • Interface directly with customers regarding technical issues, schedules, and project deliverables.
  • Occasionally lift up to 25 pounds.

Job description

As a Project Engineer at CMM Optic, you will get to drive critical technical processes in the design and manufacture of state-of-the-art optical components and systems. Our team produces spaceborne telescopes, ultra-precision semiconductor components, and much more.


This role serves as the primary technical liaison between engineering, manufacturing, quality, supply chain, and customers to ensure projects are completed on time, within budget, and in compliance with all relevant specifications.


Success in this role will require the Project Engineer to develop a deep understanding of our manufacturing and metrology processes. Hands‑on experience will be a key portion of training.

  • Proficiency in SolidWorks, Zemax, GlobalShop ERP, and Microsoft Project

  • Strong understanding of GD&T (ASME Y14.5)

  • Education or experience in the theory or manufacturing of optics

  • Experience in aerospace, defense, precision machining, or industrial manufacturing preferred.

  • Familiarity with ISO 9001 and AS9100 quality systems.

  • Proficiency with machining or other manufacturing processes

  • Experience with CAM software

  • Experience with Finite Element Analysis
