Job summary

Hawaiian Dredging Construction Company, Inc. seeks a Project Engineer to collaborate across all phases of project execution. You will support administration, cost control, contracts, estimating, and coordination with subcontractors and vendors on Maui Island.

Ideal candidates have a Bachelor's degree in engineering/related field and at least 4 years of construction experience. The role emphasizes safety, quality, and timely delivery of vertical and commercial projects in Hawaii.

Qualifications

  • Experience with concrete/precast, renovations, healthcare, hospitality and vertical construction projects.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing the prime contract, subcontracts, purchase orders, and letters of intent.
  • Prepare, track, and process submittals, RFIs, clarifications, permits, and procurement of permanent materials.
  • Serve as a liaison between Owners, Architects, Consultants, Subcontractors, and Suppliers.
  • Administer project documentation and communications.
  • Price, prepare, and negotiate contract changes and change orders.
  • Support cost control, forecasting, and progress reporting.
  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Superintendents to support construction activities.
  • Assist with scheduling, weekly work plans, and resolution of field issues.
  • Ensure drawings, specifications, and updated information are distributed to the field.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate subcontractor and vendor activities, deliveries, and logistics.
  • Assist with subcontractor coordination meetings and payment reviews.
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with safety, quality, and contract requirements.

JOB OVERVIEW:

The Project Engineer collaborates across all phases of project execution, supporting key aspects of Project Management including project administration, self-performed work, cost management, contracts, estimating, subcontractor and vendor coordination, quality control, and safety management. This role plays a critical part in ensuring projects are delivered efficiently, safely, and in alignment with contract requirements and company standards.

To be successful in this role, candidates must be adaptable and comfortable managing a wide range of responsibilities, applying strong organizational and problem-solving skills to effectively prioritize tasks in a fast-paced construction environment.As a Project Engineer in the Building, Maui Division, you will be assigned to projects on the island of Maui.The Building Division continues to partner with owners and developers to produce retail spaces, luxury condominiums, hotel renovations, housing developments and critical upgrades at healthcare facilities across the island. Specializing in vertical and large commercial/residential structures. The Building Division has created many of Hawaiis iconic structures.

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES:

Project & Contract Administration

  • Assist in managing the prime contract, subcontracts, purchase orders, and letters of intent.
  • Prepare, track, and process submittals, RFIs, clarifications, permits, and procurement of permanent materials.
  • Serve as a liaison between Owners, Architects, Consultants, Subcontractors, and Suppliers.

Construction & Field Support

  • Coordinate with Project Managers and Superintendents to support construction activities.
  • Assist with scheduling, weekly work plans, and resolution of field issues.
  • Ensure drawings, specifications, and updated information are distributed to the field.
  • Support self-performed work activities, including quality, productivity, and documentation.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for compliance with plans and specifications.
  • Coordinate subcontractor and vendor activities, deliveries, and logistics.
  • Assist with subcontractor coordination meetings and payment reviews.
  • Ensure subcontractor compliance with safety, quality, and contract requirements.

Material Control

  • Verify material purchases for compliance with specifications, quantities, and pricing.
  • Coordinate material delivery, storage, and installation sequencing.

Safety & Quality

  • Enforce company and project Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies.
  • Ensure contractual and company quality standards are met across all assigned work.
  • May mentor or supervise junior Project Engineers.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships.
SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelors degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of construction industry experience, preferably with a general contractor.
  • Preferred experience with concrete/precast, general renovation, healthcare, hospitality and other vertical construction projects.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Basic estimating and scheduling skills with an understanding of project cost and schedule controls.
  • Strong ability to read, interpret, and apply construction plans, drawings, and specifications.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office; experience with Bluebeam and Adobe preferred.
  • Familiarity with construction methods, materials, and coordination across multiple trades.

  • Effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across project teams.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to plan, prioritize, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Ability to perform effectively under pressure and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • Work during normal operating hours to organize and complete work within given deadlines. Work overtime and weekends as required.
  • Construction rarely goes exactly according to plan. We need people who are resourceful, persistent, and willing to take ownership when challenges arise. The right candidate will aggressively pursue solutions, maintain constant follow-through with trades and subcontractors, and hold people accountable for their schedules and commitments. You must be willing to push through obstacles, communicate clearly, and maintain the urgency necessary to keep the project on schedule and get the job done.
  • Due to the demands and scheduling requirements of our construction projects, employees should be prepared to work beyond a standard 8-hour workday when necessary to keep the project on schedule.
  • Our projects are located throughout the Big Island. Employees must be willing and able to work at project sites anywhere on the island and accommodate the commute required for each assignment. Given the size and geography of the Big Island, travel to different project locations is an inherent part of the job, and flexibility is expected.
