Job summary

RK&K is seeking a Licensed Project Engineer to join the Water Resources Division in Fairfax, VA, focusing on stormwater management and drainage design for transportation projects. You will plan, design, and implement drainage systems and perform hydraulic modeling using standard software.

Essential duties include designing drainage systems, preparing reports, and supporting field data collection, with collaboration across multi-disciplinary teams in a hybrid work setting.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field.
  • 4+ years of experience supporting transportation projects.
  • PE license or ability to obtain within 12 months of hire.
  • Advanced knowledge of drainage design, H&H modeling and stormwater management.
  • Proficient with industry software listed in qualifications.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and deliver stormwater management strategies for transportation projects.
  • Conduct drainage design analyses and create plans for improvements.
  • Design erosion and sediment control measures as needed.
  • Model hydraulic systems using HEC-RAS for bridges and culverts.
  • Utilize InletSoft, Pipesoft, CulvertSoft for inlet and pipe networks.
  • Prepare reports, drawings, specifications and cost estimates.

Job description

At RK&K, we are currently hiring a Licensed Project Engineer to join our Water Resources Division in Fairfax, VA. As a Water Resources Engineer at RK&K you will support company-wide efforts in stormwater management and drainage design for transportation related projects. You will be responsible for the planning, designing, and implementation of effective drainage systems to ensure efficient conveyance and management of stormwater. Your expertise in hydraulic modeling and the use of industry standard software will be essential to your role.

Essential Functions
  • Develop and deliver industry leading stormwater management strategies for transportation projects, ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and guidelines
  • Conduct drainage design activities, including the analysis of existing drainage systems, designing new drainage systems and ditches, and creating appropriate plans
  • Design erosion and sediment control measures as necessary for the proposed improvements and create appropriate plans
  • Utilize hydraulic modeling software such as HEC-RAS to model major bridge and culvert crossings
  • Employ software tools such as Inletsoft, Pipesoft, Culvertsoft, to design and analyze inlets, pipe networks, and culverts
  • Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations related to drainage design and stormwater management, contributing to the project deliverables and progress reporting
  • Prepare permit sketches, construction documents, specifications and cost estimates as needed
  • Perform scour analysis
  • Perform field investigations to collect data, take field measurements, photographs, sketches, and verifying surveys
Required Skills and Experience
  • Minimum of Four (4) years of experience as a Civil Engineer supporting transportation projects
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related field
  • Professional Engineer (P.E.) License or the ability to obtain within 12 months of hire
  • Advanced knowledge of drainage design, H&H modeling and stormwater management
  • Proficient with industry software: MicroStation, HEC-RAS, SWMM, AutoCAD, Civil3d, InletSoft, PipeSoft, CulvertSoft, PondPack
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to convey technical concepts and collaborate effectively with multi-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to work as part of a team and independently
Preferred Skills and Experience
  • Master's degree in Civil Engineering
  • Experience with OpenRoads Designer
  • Experience supporting VDOT and other local Virginia agencies
