Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer II - HVAC to provide engineering support for Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems within a regulated manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for ensuring HVAC systems operate reliably, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable quality and regulatory standards while supporting facility operations, maintenance, and capital improvement projects.
The ideal candidate will have experience with HVAC systems that support controlled environments, along with a strong background in troubleshooting, commissioning, automation, and compliance.
Key Responsibilities
HVAC Engineering and Technical Support
- Design, review, and modify HVAC systems, including:
- Air Handling Units (AHUs)
- Ductwork and airflow distribution systems
- Heating, cooling, humidification, and filtration systems
- Perform engineering calculations related to airflow, pressure, thermal loads, and energy performance.
- Ensure HVAC systems meet Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Good Engineering Practice (GEP), and site engineering standards.
- Review and approve engineering drawings, specifications, and change documentation.
- Support HVAC system commissioning, qualification, and requalification activities.
Operations and Maintenance Support
- Troubleshoot HVAC system failures, deviations, and operational issues.
- Analyze airflow, pressure, humidity, and temperature performance to identify root causes and implement corrective actions.
- Partner with operations and maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues while minimizing operational impact.
- Participate in on-call or off-hours support as required.
Building Automation and Controls
- Support HVAC systems integrated with Building Automation Systems (BAS).
- Monitor system alarms and performance trends.
- Troubleshoot automation-related issues.
- Review, test, and implement BAS control changes to improve system performance and reliability.
Capital Projects and Continuous Improvement
- Lead or support HVAC-related capital projects, system upgrades, retrofits, and facility expansions.
- Identify opportunities to improve energy efficiency and sustainability through airflow optimization, heat recovery, and other initiatives.
- Support retro-commissioning efforts to improve system reliability and performance.
- Assist with project planning, scope development, scheduling, budgeting, and execution.
Compliance and Documentation
- Ensure HVAC systems comply with applicable regulatory and quality requirements, including FDA and GMP standards.
- Support internal and external audits, inspections, and deviation investigations.
- Develop and maintain:
- Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Engineering standards
- Change controls
- Validation and qualification documentation
- Provide technical support for safety reviews and permitting activities.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
Experience
- 3-8+ years of HVAC engineering or utilities engineering experience.
- Experience supporting pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or other regulated manufacturing environments is preferred.
Required Skills
- Strong knowledge of HVAC system design, operation, and maintenance.
- Experience supporting cleanrooms and controlled environments.
- Familiarity with Building Automation Systems (BAS) and HVAC controls.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced engineering environment.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills with engineering, maintenance, operations, and quality teams.
