Job description

Summary: Apply engineering principles and concepts learned from previous experience and formal education. Plan and perform project management and engineering duties for design, construction administration, assessments, and investigations. Provide work direction to technicians and less experienced colleagues. Work includes engineering calculations and decision-making and is performed on multiple projects simultaneously. Review and seal project specifications for accuracy and compliance with State Statutes. Recognize opportunities for improvement, research, recommend solutions to the organization, and participate in their implementation.

Core Responsibilities:
  1. Prepare engineering documents: Collect and analyze field data of existing conditions, complete engineering calculations to determine design parameters, and identify optimal solutions within budget constraints. Review calculations and documents for QA/QC; responsibility ultimately lies with the incumbent.
  2. Perform construction management duties: Conduct initial meetings with contractors, review and obtain pricing, and make recommendations on project awards. Monitor construction to ensure compliance with project documents, coordinate deficiencies for resolution, and evaluate potential solutions for conflicts during work.
  3. Conduct assessments and investigations: Determine appropriate testing methods, operate testing equipment, and oversee destructive testing of roofing and wall systems. Document conditions, deficiencies, and provide recommendations for improvements.
  4. Other responsibilities as assigned.
Skills and Knowledge:
  • Knowledge of materials and installation processes for roofing, wall, and envelope assemblies.
  • Understanding of Building Codes and engineering calculations; applying engineering judgment to field conditions.
  • Ability to interpret project specifications, identify discrepancies, and communicate findings effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Proficiency with assessment equipment such as infrared cameras, electrical meters, and water testing units.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Computer skills including word processing and spreadsheets.
Education and Training:
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering.
  • Professional Engineer license (NC).
  • Current or in-progress Registered Consultant certification.
Work Experience:
  • Typically four or more years of professional engineering experience, preferably with a consulting or engineering firm. Relevant educational or technical programs and certifications may count towards experience.
Physical and Environmental Demands:
  • Sufficient physical ability to lift approximately 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand or walk for extended periods.
  • Ability to climb ladders.
