Responsibilities

  • Own technical execution of ASME OSP projects from quotation through design release, supplier build, and production support.
  • Perform and review ASME Section VIII calculations for shell/head thickness, MAWP, MDMT, nozzle reinforcement, and openings.
  • Create and release SolidWorks models, fabrication drawings, BOMs, weld details, nozzle layouts, tolerances, and GD&T.
  • Use COMPASS, Mathcad, and Comsal for vessel calculations; support CFD/FEA as needed.
  • Provide technical input to quotations including design assumptions and manufacturability.
  • Lead design-for-manufacturing reviews with suppliers for forming, welding, machining, NDE, and inspection.
  • Review and disposition supplier RFIs, deviations, and NCRs with Quality and Operations.
  • Support PPAP and First Article Inspection through ballooned drawings and inspection plans.
  • Partner with Quality to define dimensional inspection, material traceability, weld/NDE, and certification requirements.
  • Ensure designs comply with ASME VIII and applicable sections, customer specs, and internal standards.
  • Contribute to root-cause analysis and corrective actions; update drawings and standards accordingly.
  • Maintain controlled calculations and design history; develop standards to improve OSP scalability.
  • Communicate across engineering, quality, sourcing, operations, and suppliers; travel up to 25%.

Job description

We are seeking an ASME Project Engineer to support the ASME Outside Sourced Production (OSP) business and provide technical ownership of pressure-vessel designs from quotation through production validation. This role reports to the Program Manager and works closely with the Project Manager, sales, quality, sourcing, operations, and external manufacturing partners.

The ASME Project Engineer will own code-compliant calculations, SolidWorks models and drawings, technical supplier support, and engineering validation for carbon- and stainless-steel pressure vessels. The role will also support PPAP, First Article Inspection, inspection planning, and disposition of supplier technical issues.

The ideal candidate combines strong mechanical design fundamentals with practical pressure-vessel manufacturing knowledge. Success requires sound engineering judgment, working knowledge of ASME Section VIII, disciplined drawing/customization control, and the ability to translate technical requirements into clear manufacturing and quality expectations.

Responsibilities
  • Own technical execution of ASME OSP projects from quotation through design release, supplier build, First Article Inspection, and production support.
  • Perform and review ASME Section VIII, Division 1 calculations for shell/head thickness, MAWP, MDMT, nozzle reinforcement, external pressure, openings, and applicable components.
  • Create and release SolidWorks 3D models, fabrication drawings, bills of material, weld details, nozzle layouts, tolerances, and GD&T requirements.
  • Use COMPRESS, Mathcad, and Comsal for vessel calculations; support CFD/FEA analysis for complex structural, thermal, or flow conditions as required.
  • Provide technical input to quotations, including design assumptions, materials, code requirements, manufacturability, technical risks, and supplier capability.
  • Lead design-for-manufacturing reviews with OSP suppliers for forming, welding, machining, NDE, inspection, testing, and material handling.
  • Review and disposition supplier RFIs, deviations, substitutions, drawing comments, and NCRs in coordination with Quality and Operations.
  • Support PPAP and First Article Inspection through ballooned drawings, critical characteristics, inspection plans, acceptance criteria, and first-article review.
  • Partner with Quality to define dimensional inspection, material traceability, weld/NDE, pressure-test, certification, and final documentation requirements.
  • Ensure designs comply with ASME Section VIII and applicable Sections II, V, and IX, customer specifications, and internal standards.
  • Support root-cause analysis and corrective actions; incorporate lessons learned into drawings, standards, and future designs.
  • Maintain controlled calculations, drawings, revisions, approvals, and design history; develop standards and templates that improve OSP scalability.
Critical Skills, Knowledge & Abilities
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks for 3D modeling and production drawings is required.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Section VIII, Division 1 pressure-vessel design requirements and calculations.
  • Experience with Mathcad and COMPRESS preferred; familiarity with Comsal for CFD and FEA analysis methods/tools preferred.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T and engineering drawing practices; ASME Y14.5 knowledge preferred.
  • Knowledge of pressure-vessel fabrication, materials, forming, welding, machining, NDE, and pressure testing.
  • Ability to perform, review, and document mechanical design calculations with clear assumptions and engineering judgment.
  • Ability to translate customer specifications and code requirements into manufacturable drawings and supplier requirements.
  • Experience with design-for-manufacturing and technical collaboration with fabricators or contract manufacturers.
  • Familiarity with PPAP, First Article Inspection, ballooned drawings, critical characteristics, and inspection-plan development preferred.
  • Familiarity with ASME Sections II, V, and IX quality/documentation requirements, including materials, NDE, welding qualification, and traceability, preferred.
  • Practical problem-solving skills, including evaluation of deviations, NCRs, root cause, and corrective actions.
  • Strong communication and ability to work across engineering, quality, sourcing, operations, project management, customers, and suppliers.
  • Digital fluency, including Microsoft 365 and responsible use of generative AI to improve requirements review, documentation, standardization, and workflow efficiency while maintaining technical verification.
  • Up to 25% travel required.
Desired Experience
  • 3-5 years of mechanical or design engineering experience in pressure vessels, tanks, welded fabrication, or related industrial equipment, including hands-on SolidWorks production drawings.
  • Experience performing or reviewing ASME Section VIII, Division 1 pressure-vessel calculations.
  • Experience with Mathcad, COMPRESS, and/or CFD/FEA analysis tools preferred.
  • Experience working with suppliers, fabricators, contract manufacturers, or outside manufacturing partners preferred.
  • Experience with PPAP, First Article Inspection, inspection planning, and ASME quality documentation such as material, weld, NDE, pressure-test, and code records preferred.
  • Experience supporting products from quotation and design release through manufacturing, inspection, and production launch preferred.
  • Experience with ERP, PDM/PLM, quality, or engineering document-control systems preferred.
Education & Training
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline required.
  • Formal training or demonstrated working knowledge of ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code Section VIII preferred.
