Heavy Industrial Manufacturing | Plant Engineering | Mechanical Integrity | Infrastructure Improvements
This opportunity offers a competitive hourly rate, along with per diem for qualified candidates, making it an attractive option for both local professionals and those willing to travel or relocate for the assignment.
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Project Engineer / Industrial Project Manager to support engineering, maintenance, and infrastructure improvement projects at a large industrial manufacturing facility.
This is a hands‑on, individual contributor role focused on executing plant engineering, maintenance, repair, and reliability improvement projects rather than managing large‑scale capital construction programs.
Projects will vary in complexity, with budgets starting around $50,000 and timelines ranging from several months to a year or longer. Responsibilities include structural steel repairs, mechanical integrity improvements, equipment upgrades, infrastructure rehabilitation, and other projects critical to maintaining safe, reliable plant operations.
The ideal candidate brings a strong engineering background, practical knowledge of heavy industrial maintenance and construction, and experience coordinating contractors and executing projects within an active operating facility.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage engineering, maintenance, repair, and infrastructure improvement projects from initial scope development through execution, commissioning, and closeout.
- Support projects involving industrial structural steel, mechanical systems, plant equipment, and facility infrastructure.
- Partner closely with plant engineering, maintenance, operations, EHS, procurement, and external contractors to identify and execute facility improvement projects.
- Develop project scopes, cost estimates, budgets, schedules, and execution plans for projects ranging from $50K to larger, more complex initiatives.
- Coordinate and oversee contractors, construction activities, equipment installations, and maintenance‑related project work.
- Provide hands‑on technical oversight, troubleshooting, and engineering support throughout project execution.
- Support mechanical integrity, asset reliability, and process safety initiatives aimed at improving equipment performance and extending asset life.
- Manage project expenditures, track schedules, maintain documentation, and communicate project status to plant stakeholders.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable safety, environmental, engineering, and regulatory requirements.
- Coordinate equipment commissioning, startup, and turnover to plant operations and maintenance teams.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Project Management, or a related technical discipline.
- 7+ years of experience in project engineering, plant engineering, maintenance engineering, or industrial project management within heavy industrial environments.
- Strong knowledge of industrial structural steel construction, maintenance, repair, and rehabilitation practices.
- Demonstrated experience executing engineering and maintenance projects in active industrial facilities.
- Experience managing contractors, project budgets, schedules, procurement activities, and field execution.
- Practical understanding of industrial equipment, mechanical systems, plant infrastructure, and maintenance practices.
- Familiarity with project cost controls, capital authorization processes, and project reporting.
- Knowledge of industrial safety requirements, construction practices, and risk management.
- Experience supporting equipment installation, commissioning, and startup.
- Proficiency with project management and scheduling tools such as Microsoft Project, Primavera P6, SAP, or similar systems.
Preferred Qualifications
- 10+ years of experience in heavy industrial manufacturing, chemical processing, mining, fertilizer production, power generation, or related industries.
- Background in plant engineering, maintenance engineering, reliability engineering, or mechanical integrity.
- Experience with brownfield projects, aging industrial infrastructure, and structural steel repair or replacement.
- Strong understanding of mechanical integrity programs, process safety management (PSM), and equipment reliability.
- Experience working directly with plant maintenance teams, operations personnel, and industrial contractors.
- Ability to independently manage multiple engineering and maintenance projects while remaining actively involved in field execution.
What Makes This Opportunity Different?
This is not a traditional large-capital-project management position. We are looking for a technically strong engineering professional who enjoys working directly with plant operations and maintenance teams, solving practical engineering challenges, and delivering projects that have a measurable impact on facility safety, reliability, and performance.
The ideal candidate is equally comfortable developing a project scope, reviewing engineering drawings, walking down equipment in the field, coordinating contractors, and overseeing construction or repair activities.
This opportunity is particularly well suited for an experienced Plant Engineer, Maintenance Engineer, Mechanical Project Engineer, or Project Engineer looking to take ownership of meaningful industrial improvement projects without the responsibilities of managing a large capital projects department.
