Job summary

Baker Construction & Development, Inc. in Spokane, WA is seeking a Project Engineer to support commercial construction projects from planning through closeout.

You will assist Project Managers with scheduling, procurement, and documentation while coordinating with subcontractors, architects, and owners to ensure safety and quality. The role emphasizes attention to detail, teamwork, and growth within a supportive, values-driven culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred; equivalent commercial construction experience considered.
  • 3+ years of experience with a commercial general contractor.
  • Ability to read construction drawings, specifications, and plans.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; excellent communication.

Responsibilities

  • Support Project Managers with project planning, scheduling, coordination, and execution.
  • Assist with subcontractor buyouts, scope reviews, and procurement activities.
  • Prepare quantity takeoffs, bid packages, preliminary estimates, and cost evaluations.
  • Manage project documentation: RFIs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes, closeout docs.
  • Coordinate with architects, engineers, owners, subcontractors, and field teams to resolve issues.
  • Review shop drawings and construction documents for compliance and constructability.
  • Assist with project startup: Procore setup, permits, and project logs.
  • Support quality control through inspections and coordination with teams.
  • Contribute to jobsite safety documentation and Baker’s safety culture.
  • Monitor project costs and identify opportunities for efficiency.

Salary Range: $60,000–$80,000 annually, DOE

What You’ll Be Doing
As a Project Engineer, you will provide critical support throughout all phases of commercial construction projects, helping ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to Baker’s high standards. Responsibilities include:

  • Supporting Project Managers with project planning, scheduling, coordination, and execution.
  • Assisting with subcontractor buyouts, scope reviews, and procurement activities.
  • Preparing quantity takeoffs, bid packages, preliminary estimates, and cost evaluations.
  • Managing project documentation including RFIs, submittals, change orders, meeting minutes, and closeout documents.
  • Coordinating with architects, engineers, owners, subcontractors, and field teams to resolve project issues.
  • Reviewing shop drawings, product submittals, and construction documents for compliance and constructability.
  • Assisting with project startup, including Procore setup, contract documentation, permits, and project logs.
  • Supporting quality control efforts through inspections, documentation, and coordination with project teams.
  • Assisting with jobsite safety documentation and supporting Baker’s safety culture.
  • Helping monitor project costs and identifying opportunities for improved efficiency and value.

What We’re Looking For

  • Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Construction Engineering, or a related field preferred; equivalent commercial construction experience considered.
  • 3+ years of experience with a commercial general contractor preferred.
  • Understanding of commercial construction methods, materials, scheduling, estimating, and contract documents.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, and plans.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency with Procore, Bluebeam, Microsoft Office Suite, and Microsoft Project preferred. Experience with On-Screen Takeoff, Acumatica, or similar construction software is a plus.
  • Self-starter with strong problem-solving skills and a desire to continue learning and growing within the construction industry.

Workplace Setting
At Baker Construction, this role functions in a dual environment, split between a professional corporate office and active construction project sites. In the office, you will frequently utilize standard business technology, including computers, telecommunications, and document management systems.
When visiting or working on-site, you may be exposed to more rugged conditions, including:

  • Industrial Elements: Work near moving mechanical equipment, construction materials, and active project operations.
  • External Conditions: Tasks may be performed outdoors in varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, and precipitation.
  • Acoustics: Noise levels at project sites can range from moderate to loud.

Physical Requirements
To perform the essential functions of this position, the following physical capabilities are necessary:

  • Movement: Frequent sitting, standing, walking, and navigating active construction sites. Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, or crawling may be required.
  • Coordination: Regular use of hands and arms to operate computers, handle documents, and interact with construction materials and equipment.
  • Strength: Ability to lift and carry up to 25 pounds occasionally.
  • Sensory Perception: Ability to communicate clearly, hear instructions, and observe construction activities. Vision requirements include close and distance vision, depth perception, color distinction, and the ability to adjust focus.
