Build Projects. Solve Challenges. Make an Impact.
Are you an engineer who enjoys being out in the field, solving real-world construction challenges, and seeing projects come to life?
We are seeking a Project Engineer I for an exciting 12-month contract opportunity supporting major natural gas infrastructure projects throughout the Salt Lake City, Utah area.
This is not your typical desk-based engineering design role! We're looking for a hands-on engineering professional who thrives in a fast-paced construction environment, enjoys working with contractors and stakeholders, and knows how to keep multiple projects moving forward.
You’ll have the opportunity to manage projects ranging from $100K to several million dollars, collaborate with diverse teams, and play a key role in delivering essential infrastructure improvements throughout Utah.
Don’t have natural gas or pipeline experience? That’s okay! We welcome engineers with construction management, civil infrastructure, mechanical engineering, and other relevant project execution backgrounds.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Drive Construction Projects Forward: Coordinate multiple infrastructure construction projects simultaneously, from initial planning through completion.
- Be Where the Action Is: Spend approximately 70% of your time in the field, overseeing construction activities, addressing challenges, and supporting project execution.
- Solve Real-World Problems: Troubleshoot unexpected construction issues, identify practical solutions, and help keep projects on schedule.
- Collaborate with Key Stakeholders: Work closely with contractors, inspectors, engineering teams, property owners, municipalities, and local agencies.
- Coordinate Construction Activities: Review engineering drawings, support permitting efforts, and ensure contractors have the information and resources needed to complete work efficiently.
- Manage Project Performance: Monitor schedules, budgets, forecasts, project costs, and potential risks across multiple active projects.
- Navigate Complex Construction Environments: Support infrastructure projects in developed neighborhoods, busy roadways, and areas requiring significant public and municipal coordination.
- Champion Safety & Quality: Help ensure construction activities meet safety expectations, engineering requirements, and project completion standards.
What We’re Looking For
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering.
- Engineering background with hands-on construction management, field coordination, or project execution experience.
- Experience managing or coordinating multiple construction projects and competing priorities.
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply engineering drawings and construction plans.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to respond quickly and effectively to unexpected field challenges.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills when working with contractors, municipalities, property owners, and internal teams.
- Strong organizational skills, initiative, and the ability to keep projects progressing in a dynamic environment.
- Willingness to spend approximately 70% of the workweek in the field.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Civil, Mechanical, or Construction Engineering background.
- Experience supporting utility, energy, infrastructure, or other construction projects.
- Natural gas distribution, pipeline construction, or underground utility experience.
- Experience with permitting, municipal coordination, construction oversight, and contractor management.
- Experience managing construction projects in congested urban environments.
What Will Make You Successful?
We're looking for more than technical engineering knowledge. The ideal candidate is someone who:
- Enjoys being in the field and actively involved in construction operations.
- Takes ownership of projects and proactively addresses challenges.
- Can confidently communicate with everyone from field crews to municipal representatives and residents.
- Remains organized and adaptable while juggling multiple projects.
- Brings a positive, professional, and solutions-oriented approach to challenging situations.
- Understands how to balance safety, schedules, budgets, and stakeholder expectations.
