Job summary

Airgas is seeking a Project Engineer based in Plumsteadville, PA, to guide key projects in accordance with our Specialty Gases Management process.

This role requires a Bachelor's degree and at least 7 years of engineering and project management experience, with responsibilities ranging from project planning and scheduling to engineering design and safety compliance. Key Responsibilities
  • Guide and steward assigned projects in accordance with the Airgas Specialty Gases Project Management process.
  • Project planning and scheduling.
  • Scope definition.
  • Engineering design and review.
  • Functional and parts specification.
  • Budgeting and budget stewardship.
  • Quality assurance.
  • Coordination of risk assessment and mitigation.
  • Planning maintenance and procedures.
  • Communications and project documentation.
  • Obtain technical guidance and consultation from Airgas Engineering and other experts/Design Authorities as needed.
  • Maintain zero accident safety record and keep safety as top priority.
  • Follow all applicable HSE procedures and foster a culture of safety.
  • Contribute to Good Catches and participate in monthly safety meetings.
  • Investigate and follow up on HSE-related incidents.
  • Develop clear project scope with input from stakeholders (management, HSE, plant operations, engineering, maintenance, automation).
  • Assist with viability and impact studies of proposed projects and develop creative solutions.
  • Develop and support technical proposals.
  • Develop P&ID and system mechanical layout.
  • Collaborate on the configuration of system PLCs.
  • Support the preparation of electrical and instrumentation diagrams.
  • Identify equipment suitable for project functionality.
  • Prepare equipment cost estimates and engineering estimates in support of proposals.
  • Foster alignment and cooperation from relevant stakeholders.
  • Bring projects to fruition in compliance with company, federal, state and local regulations.
  • Guide projects per procedure including design review, hazards analysis, MOC, PSSR, SOP development and operator training.
  • Complete projects successfully while meeting timeline and budget goals.
  • Ensure project and design compliance with medical/Drug manufacturing requirements and CGMP.
  • Develop engineering packages for bids (RFQs) supporting fair vendor pricing and minimizing field change notices.
  • Procure equipment.
  • Facilitate construction and project installation.
  • Coordinate system testing and check‑out.
  • Serve on installation/start‑up support team.
  • Report on safety, budget, schedule and quality.
  • Keep stakeholders informed of plans, progress and opportunities.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree required.
  • Minimum 7 years of engineering and project management experience in a gas or chemical manufacturing business.
  • Experience managing project budgets of 5 MM+.
  • Experience managing projects with medical applications.
  • Familiarity with mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, operation and controls of process equipment used in Airgas technologies.
  • Ability to interpret and apply Airgas Industrial Management System and relevant codes (ANSI, ASME, NFPA, CGMP, CGA).
  • Ability to understand and interpret applicable specifications and standards.
  • Self‑starter capable of moving projects with minimal direction.
  • Demonstrated ability to handle multiple tasks, prioritize work, and work effectively within a project execution team.
  • Excellent skills with Google Suite (Docs, Sheets, Slides) and MS Project.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BS in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Familiarity with vendors and suppliers of process equipment and services.
  • Familiarity with project management tools and techniques (scope definition and changes, scheduling, critical path, estimating, budgeting, reporting, cost control).
  • Knowledge of instrumentation, electrical and PLCs desirable.
  • Ability to coordinate with other groups within ASG, Airgas, external customers, and suppliers.
  • Travel up to 20% of the time.
  • Light to moderate physical activity required (bending, walking, climbing ladders, occasional lifting up to 30 lb).
