About the Role
A Midwest-based industrial manufacturing group is seeking a Project Engineer to join its Capital Projects Engineering team. This role is central to driving engineering and construction projects across a network of production plants. With full ownership of project execution from concept through commissioning, the Project Engineer will work cross-functionally to implement solutions that improve facility performance, safety, and operational efficiency.
This is a dynamic, field-integrated role for a hands-on engineer who enjoys problem solving, collaborating with stakeholders, and delivering high-impact infrastructure improvements.
Primary Job Functions
- Lead full-cycle project execution: from early-stage project definition and budgeting to post-installation performance review and invoice closeout
- Identify and evaluate project opportunities that improve plant safety, reliability, compliance, and throughput
- Translate stakeholder goals into actionable scopes of work and cost-justified project plans
- Specify mechanical and process equipment based on operating requirements, facility layout, and cost-performance tradeoffs
- Develop and manage construction bid packages, conduct vendor and contractor evaluations, and oversee execution at the site level
- Coordinate engineering partners, field teams, and operations to ensure alignment on project scope, sequencing, and expectations
- Create and review design documents including equipment specifications, P&IDs, layout drawings, and utility schematics
- Ensure projects meet all health, safety, environmental, and regulatory requirements, including permitting and internal compliance checks
- Partner with site personnel and operations leaders to evaluate plant systems and identify areas for improvement
- Collect process and equipment data from the field to inform design decisions and process improvements
- Drive continuous improvement in project engineering standards, tools, and documentation
Core Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of process engineering principles, including heat and material balances, fluid mechanics, and equipment sizing
- Ability to design, specify, and/or evaluate industrial equipment such as tanks, pumps, mixers, heat exchangers, piping systems, and boilers
- Competency in reading and generating P&IDs, general arrangement drawings, and control logic documentation
- Experience in project cost estimation, scheduling, and capital expenditure justification
- Familiarity with controls and automation basics — including writing functional specifications and collaborating with PLC/HMI integrators
- Practical knowledge of safety and environmental compliance processes, including HAZOP reviews and Management of Change (MOC)
- Experience working with cross-functional teams and external engineering firms to complete detailed design packages
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, prioritize effectively, and communicate progress to key stakeholders
- Field awareness and hands-on problem solving — comfortable navigating plant environments and collecting real-time equipment and process data
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Chemical, or related Engineering field
- 5+ years of experience in capital project engineering within a manufacturing or processing environment
- Proven success in executing multi-disciplinary engineering projects, from front-end engineering to startup
- Strong project management and communication skills across technical and non-technical teams
- Comfortable working independently and solving problems in less-structured or legacy operating environments
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with HAZOP, PSM, and environmental permitting processes
- Familiarity with AutoCAD (2D/3D), hydraulic modeling, and process simulation tools
- Knowledge of API 650/653, ASME standards, and mechanical integrity practices
- Experience designing or integrating steam, hot oil, compressed air, or chemical feed systems
- Prior exposure to industrial sectors such as specialty chemicals, energy, pharma, food processing, oil & gas, or heavy manufacturing
- Annual bonus target: 10% (up to 2x multiplier based on performance)
- 401(k) with 7% company match
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage (multiple plan options)
- HSA contributions, wellness incentives, and company-funded critical illness coverage
- Maternity and pharmacy HSA grant programs ($2,000)
- Access to Employee Wellness Centers
- Company-paid life insurance, short-term and long-term disability
