Job description

Summary

We are representing a well-established Design-Build General Contractor specializing in healthcare construction seeking an experienced Project Engineer to oversee and drive their preconstruction and engineering operations. This is a senior leadership role for a construction professional who brings both deep estimating expertise and the management acumen to lead, develop, and elevate a high-performing team.

This role is ideal for someone who is equally comfortable in the weeds of a detailed estimate and at the table with a client or architect — a hands‑on leader who sets the standard, holds the team accountable, and takes personal ownership of both departmental performance and project outcomes.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in healthcare or medical facility construction, a thorough understanding of all trades, and the ability to manage a full bid pipeline from initial scope review through final delivery and post‑bid buyout. This person leads by example, develops the people around them, and brings the organizational discipline to keep a busy preconstruction department running at a high level.

Projects are primarily healthcare and medical facility construction delivered through a design‑build model, requiring close coordination with clients, architects, engineers, and subcontractors throughout preconstruction and into construction.

Key Responsibilities
  • Guide the full bid process from initial scope review through final proposal delivery, ensuring alignment with company standards and client requirements
  • Lead conceptual estimating, detailed bid compilation, and post‑bid subcontractor buyouts in alignment with project goals and schedules
  • Develop and implement best practices for estimating and project engineering, maintaining consistency and quality across all departmental output
  • Prepare and oversee final proposals and budgets, providing strategic guidance and sign‑off for management approval
  • Perform and oversee detailed quantity takeoffs, scope of work development, and subcontractor bid analysis across all trades
  • Manage preconstruction RFIs to resolve project discrepancies and maintain accurate and complete documentation
  • Ensure accurate and timely maintenance of all project information in Procore, Master Builder, and other relevant platforms
  • Stay current on market trends, material pricing, and industry best practices to continuously sharpen the firm's competitive positioning
Subcontractor & Client Coordination
  • Evaluate and manage subcontractor bids ensuring compliance with project specifications, material quality, and cost targets
  • Coordinate with the estimating team to distribute project documents, CADs, and materials pricing to subcontractors in a timely manner
  • Foster strong relationships with clients, architects, and project managers to clarify project scope, materials, and scheduling needs
  • Represent the company at client and subcontractor site visits, addressing issues proactively and maintaining positive working relationships
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to organize and supervise the preparation of project schedules for efficient project execution

Provide direct leadership, mentorship, and training to estimating and engineering staff — supporting their professional growth and ensuring consistently high‑quality work product

Delegate tasks effectively and monitor team performance, providing regular feedback to the Director of Construction

Participate in hiring and personnel decisions to build and maintain a skilled, motivated, and high‑performing team

Maintain a positive and professional work environment that attracts, retains, and motivates top talent

Stay current on Procore and Bluebeam software updates and integrate relevant changes into team workflows and procedures

Quality Control & Standards
  • Ensure all estimates, proposals, and engineering documents meet the firm's quality standards before submission
  • Review and analyze drawings and specifications with the project team to ensure accurate and complete scope coverage
  • Take personal accountability for the accuracy, completeness, and timeliness of all team deliverables
  • Uphold and enforce company policies, procedures, and ethical standards across all project engineering operations
Project Experience Required
  • Healthcare & Medical Facility Construction — Hospitals, MOBs, Outpatient, Clinical
  • Design‑Build Delivery — Preconstruction through Construction
  • Conceptual Estimating & Detailed Hard Bid
  • Post‑Bid Buyout & Subcontractor Scope Leveling
  • Multi‑Trade Coordination & Preconstruction RFI Management
  • Projects ranging from $5M – $50M+

Healthcare facility construction experience strongly preferred.

Qualifications
  • 5+ years of project engineering and estimating experience in commercial or healthcare construction
  • Prior experience leading or mentoring an estimating or project engineering team required
  • Strong knowledge of all construction trades, systems, and design‑build delivery methods
  • Thorough understanding of healthcare facility construction requirements, materials, and regulatory considerations preferred
  • Proficiency in Procore, Bluebeam or On‑Screen Takeoff, Master Builder, and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, Project)
  • Strong analytical and mathematical skills including cost analysis, unit pricing, and budget forecasting
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present to clients, ownership, and design teams
  • Ability to manage multiple bids and team priorities simultaneously under tight deadlines
  • Valid driver's license required; ability to travel to client and project sites as needed
