Job summary

Fairbanks Morse Defense is seeking a Project Engineer to design and test diesel engine and generator systems, guiding projects from proposals through commissioning at customer sites. You will work with engineering, quality, program management, purchasing, operations, and external customers under the Senior Engineering Manager.

Qualifications include a BS in Mechanical or Marine Engineering, diesel/generator experience, fluid systems, 3D CAD (SolidWorks), and willingness to travel.

Qualifications

  • BS in Mechanical or Marine Engineering or equivalent required.
  • Diesel generator set knowledge and marine engines preferred.
  • Experience with fluid systems and component selection.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD and 2D CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Experience with design reviews and documentation.
  • Willingness to travel (0-10%).
  • Must be able to obtain required security clearance (NOFORN awareness).

Responsibilities

  • Serve as primary technical interface with the customer.
  • Track and coordinate engineering deliverables per contract scope.
  • Develop, release, and maintain system schematics, BOMs, and test procedures.
  • Document engineering decisions and communicate them to stakeholders.
  • Process design releases and provide drawings inputs to design teams.
  • Review design and test documents with customers and suppliers.
  • Perform design and qualification to replace obsolete components and drive cost reductions.
  • Support engine production and testing with root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Prepare test reports showing adherence to approved procedures.
  • Assist Technical Support with existing installations and programs.
  • Support new engine sales and upgrade proposals including specifications and estimating work.

Job description

Position Summary

The Project Engineer will focus on diesel engine and generator set system and component design and test, while supporting these projects from the technical proposal stage through commissioning in the customer facility. This position reports to Fairbanks Morse's Senior Engineering Manager and works closely with engineering, quality, program management, purchasing, operations, and external customers.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities
  • Be the primary technical interface with the customer.
  • Understand the contract scope of engineering work to track, prioritize, coordinate, and execute engineering deliverables.
  • Lead the development, release, and maintenance of product & project documents (system schematics, bills of materials, test procedures, reports, etc.).
  • Justify, document, and communicate engineering‑based decisions to meet project goals and objectives.
  • Complete engineering releases and changes through the PDM system, including providing inputs and guidance to Design/Drafting group to complete required drawings.
  • Meet with internal and external customers and suppliers to review contract status, review design & test documents, and resolve contract specification/scope of work.
  • Complete design & qualification work to replace obsolete components and to complete product improvements & cost reductions.
  • Support engine production and test with problem solving, root cause analysis, disposition of non-conformance, and executing corrective actions.
  • Write and release test reports demonstrating compliance with customer approved test procedures, including documentation and justification of all deviations.
  • Assist Technical Support with existing installations and programs.
  • Support new engine sales and upgrade proposals, including specification reviews, compliance matrices, and estimating engineering work.
Qualifications, Skills, and Educational Requirements
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical or Marine Engineering, or an equivalent degree.
  • Strong preference for diesel generator set knowledge and experience, including operation, troubleshooting, ABS rulesets, USCG ACP, and MIL‑SPECs related to marine diesel engines.
  • Strong preference for fluid system design and component selection experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Basic proficiency in 3D and 2D CAD (SolidWorks preferred).
  • Preference for systematic problem solving and/or risk management tools including but not limited to 8D/Red X/A3, FMEA/FMECA, Lean/Six Sigma, etc.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Willingness and flexibility to travel to interact with customers.
  • English technical proficiency required. Technical proficiency in French, German, or Danish a plus.
  • Must be able to qualify for Government Security Clearance as required. Active Secret clearance strongly preferred.
  • This position requires access or potential access to Unclassified Naval Nuclear Propulsion Information, which is Not Releasable to Foreign Nationals (NOFORN) data. Therefore, to meet NOFORN requirement, you will have to provide proof of U.S. Citizenship and attest that you do not have dual citizenship. Acceptable proof of U.S. Citizenship is a U.S. Passport, U.S. Birth Certificate or Naturalization Certificate.
