Job summary

PowerSecure, a Southern Company subsidiary, seeks a Project Development Engineer to act as the technical resource for the DI sales team during pre-sale and opportunity development. You will also stay engaged post-sale as a project-management tech resource on diverse power projects.

Based in the Durham area, you will contribute to turnkey, equipment-only and specialty projects, ensuring accurate scope, scheduling and risk management while aligning with client design intent.

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical degree.
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience as an electrical consultant, application/development engineer or related industry position.
  • Strong CAD skills; electrical engineering skills may be assessed.
  • Ability to develop concept drawings (One-line Diagrams, Site Layouts, etc.).
  • Strong commercial and industrial electrical power systems knowledge, estimation skills.
  • Reciprocating engine and power distribution equipment design knowledge.
  • DER experience is a plus; strategic and analytical thinking.
  • High attention to detail and process orientation.
  • Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal communications and relationship skills.
  • Knowledge of NEC, NFPA, IBC, IEEE, etc.
  • Review specs to determine scope, schedule, risk and delivery requirements.
  • Power system modeling (fault, coordination, arc flash) in SKM is a plus.
  • Assist in new product discussions and stay aware of industry trends.
  • Understand PowerSecure product line and business model.
  • Be familiar with the sales process and project delivery requirements.
  • Be a technical liaison for the Sales team.
  • Work with sales, engineering and manufacturing leads for shared understanding.
  • Assist in development of project scope, schedule, risk, and information management.
  • Communicate effectively for estimate/proposal development.
  • Participate in training and industry events.
  • Contribute in a fast-growing microgrid design-build environment.
  • Post-sale engineering project management.

  • Develop and lead projects; specify and obtain accurate vendor quotes.

Summary

In the position of Project Development Engineer, the primary responsibility is to serve as the technical resource contact for the DI sales team in the pre-sale development of opportunity scope, costing, and application while meeting client design intent. They will also remain involved with project post-sale as a system technical resource as part of the project management team. This position will be assigned to DI turn-key, equipment-only and one-off specialty project assignments. Position performance will focus on accurate and effective Project Development Engineering support resulting in well-defined and awarded projects.

Qualifications:
  • BS degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical degree
  • Minimum of 7 years’ experience as an electrical consultant, application/development engineer or related industry position
  • Strong CAD skills are required. - Strong computer software skillsElectrical Engineering Skills will be subject to an assessment.
  • Ability to develop concept drawings sets (Electrical One-line Diagrams, Site Layouts, etc.)
  • Strong Commercial and Industrial Electrical power systems knowledge, application analysis and estimating skills
  • Reciprocating engine and power distribution equipment design knowledge required
  • Renewable energy Distributed Energy Source (DER) experience a plus - Strategic and analytical thinking skills.
  • High attention to detail and process oriented
  • Excellent verbal, written, inter-personal communications and relationship skills
  • Codes and Standards Interpretation and Application (NEC, NFPA, IBC, IEEE, etc.)
  • Review of specifications, drawings, or customer requests to determine project scope, schedule, risk and all technical delivery requirements
  • Power system modeling (fault, coordination, arc flash) in SKM a plus - Understanding of utility interconnect applications and management of the process.
  • Assist and participate in new product offering discussions, maintain an awareness of industry product and technology trends for various product lines and applications.
  • Understand the PowerSecure product line and overall business models.
  • Be familiar with the sales process, strategic goals and project delivery requirements.
  • Be a technical liaison for the Sales team.
  • Work closely with sales staff, product engineering and manufacturing leads to ensure complete and shared project understanding.
  • Assist sales in the development of project scope, schedule, risk, and project information management.
  • Effective communication with internal team members for estimate/proposal development.
  • Participate as requested in company training events, applicable industry and product related training or certification classes and marketing industry sector events.
  • Passion to contribute in a fast-growing corporate environment and leading edge Microgrid system design-build firm.
  • Post-sale engineering project management
Essential Functions:

  • Effective prioritization and management of pre-sale and post-sale tasks within ERP system
  • Travel as necessary to client project, vendor, job site and event locations

Physical Demands:
  • Limited local travel will be required (Less than 10%)
  • Must be able to work in an office environment with a lot of sitting
  • Must be able to tolerate a full day of computer screen viewing
