Job summary

TrueNorth Steel in Fargo, ND seeks a Project Cost Accountant to manage job costing for fabrication and construction projects. You will ensure accurate labor/material/subcontract costs, support WIP and forecasts, and provide financial analysis with Project Managers and Finance.

Requirements include a Bachelor’s in accounting or related field, project accounting experience, and manufacturing/construction exposure. Competitive pay with full benefits and a 8–5 schedule.

• Strong Excel and ERP data management skills.

Responsibilities

• Maintain accurate job cost records for labor, materials, and subcontractors.
• Review and analyze project cost activity for accuracy and proper coding.
• Support cost-to-complete estimates and forecast updates with Project Managers.
• Collaborate with Project Managers to develop and track change orders.
• Ensure change orders are recorded and aligned across systems.
• Investigate cost variances and assist in internal change orders for overruns/underruns.
• Create and manage project-related purchase orders not processed by purchasing.
• Review cost allocations to projects monthly for P-Card transactions.
• Set up project resources and estimated cost of completion in ERP.
• Track unbilled revenue, over/under billings, and retainage balances.
• Participate in monthly project reviews with Project Managers.
• Provide backup support to team members as needed.

Description

POSITION: Project Cost Accountant

SHIFT: M-F 8am to 5pm (Varied Hour based on Business Demands)

PAY RATE: $74k - $81k+(DOE) + Full Benefit Package

LOCATION: Fargo, ND

SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILITIES

The Project Cost Accountant is responsible for supporting the financial management and reporting of fabrication and construction projects from award through closeout. This role ensures accurate job cost tracking, supports WIP and forecasting, and provides financial analysis in partnership with Project Managers, Operations, and the Finance team.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

• Maintain accurate job cost records for labor, materials, and subcontractors.
• Review and analyze project cost activity to ensure accuracy, completeness, and proper coding.
• Support cost-to-complete estimates and forecast updates in collaboration with Project Managers.
• Partner with Project Managers to develop, track, and maintain change orders.
• Ensure change orders are properly recorded and aligned across all required systems.
• Investigate cost variances and assist in preparing internal change orders for overruns and underruns.
• Create and manage purchase orders for project-related items not processed through the purchasing department.
• Review and complete cost allocations to projects monthly for P-Card transactions.
• Set up project resources and the estimated cost of completion on new projects within the ERP system.
• Track unbilled revenue, over/under billings, and retainage balances.
• Participate in monthly project reviews with Project Managers.
• Provide support and backup to team members as needed.
• Prompt and dependable attendance.
• Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE

• Bachelor's degree in accounting or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience.
• Previous experience in project accounting role or similar function.
• Prior manufacturing or construction industry experience preferred.
