Job summary

Nichols Contracting, Inc. (NCI) in Columbia, MD is seeking a Project Accountant III to oversee full-cycle accounting for complex commercial construction projects.

Work with project managers, estimators, and operations staff to develop budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete projections using Procore and Sage 300 CRE,

  • Oversee monthly intercompany cost reconciliation (NPS Labor) and prepare monthly owner billings in Sage and ensure compliance with contract terms.

Job description

Nichols Contracting, Inc. (NCI) is a family-owned and operated Construction and Contracting business headquartered in Columbia, MD with offices in Richmond, VA, Royal Palm Beach and Orlando, FL with a team of 170 employees. NCI is a full-service general contractor focused on providing premier services in all aspects of the construction process, from concept to completion. We manage a broad range of commercial construction projects, including new construction, tenant fit outs, and renovations. NCI services a diverse group of markets including federal, state, and local governments, as well as a variety of corporate and special industry organizations that require complex life safety and critical infrastructure needs.

We are seeking a Project Accountant III to join our Maryland team. This position is aimed at a mid to senior-level role in overseeing financial management for complex and large-scale commercial construction projects. This position supports project teams by managing job cost accounting, contract compliance, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate brings deep industry knowledge and experience with commercial contracts, change order processes, and client billing structures

Essential Functions
  • Oversee full-cycle project accounting for multiple construction projects, ensuring accuracy in job cost tracking and financial reporting.
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and operations staff to setup/manage budgets, forecasts, and cost-to-complete projections in Procore.
  • Review/Approve job-related cost invoices and ensure correct cost coding in TimberScan.
  • Oversee monthly intercompany cost reconciliation (NPS Labor)
  • Prepare and process monthly owner billings in SAGE and ensure compliance with contract terms, including retention, billing schedules, and change orders.
  • Identify and review underbilled projects and discuss with project team to maximize revenue.
  • Ensure timely management of account receivables and payables, being proactive in working with Project Managers on collection efforts.
  • Provide project team with financial reports to analyze job costs, trends, and cash flow.
  • Investigate profit variances and cost overruns with project team in preparation for the monthly job review.
  • Educate project teams and hold them accountable to NCI financial deadlines/procedures to ensure a timely month-end close and that all costs/billings are posted in the correct month.
  • Support month-end and year-end close activities, including journal entries, accruals, reporting, and audit requirements.
  • Identify and implement process improvements for efficiency and accuracy.
  • Act as liaison between accounting and operations teams, supporting financial decisions and ensuring alignment with project goals.
  • Train and mentor junior accounting staff or project accountants as needed.
  • Other related duties as assigned or needed
Required Skills/Abilities

We are looking for a flexible, detail-oriented, high-initiative team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks, produce quality work, and consistently meet deadlines.

  • Proficiency in construction accounting software, such as Sage 300 CRE, CMiC, and Procore.
  • Strong understanding of project billings and job cost accounting.
  • Familiarity with industry-specific documentation (AIA billing forms, lien waivers, subcontractor compliance).
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with data analysis.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of working cross-functionally with project teams.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
