The Project Accountant is responsible for managing financial activities related to assigned projects from initiation through closeout. This role ensures accurate accounts receivable processing, budget preparation and monitoring, detailed billing, and timely participant payments. The Project Accountant also provides cross-functional support to accounts payable and purchasing to maintain continuity of operations. This position requires strong organizational skills, financial accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
Job Duties
- Manage full-cycle accounts receivable, including invoicing, cash application, collections follow-up, and account reconciliations
- Prepare, maintain, and update detailed project budgets; monitor actuals against forecasts and identify variances
- Oversee billing processes to ensure accuracy, compliance with agreements, and timely submission
- Perform financial reconciliations related to project activity and resolve discrepancies proactively
- Process and coordinate participant or vendor payments in accordance with established policies
- Serve as backup support for accounts payable functions, including invoice review, coding, and payment processing
- Provide backup support for purchasing activities, including purchase order review and expense tracking
- Assist with month-end close procedures, reporting, and ad hoc financial analysis
- Collaborate cross-functionally to ensure accurate financial tracking and reporting
- Perform additional duties as needed to support accounting operations
Experience
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience
- Proven ability to manage projects independently from start to finish while balancing multiple deadlines
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally across departments
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office 365, particularly Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, data analysis)
- Highly organized self-starter with strong analytical, problem-solving, and time-management skills
- Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy
- Comfortable working both independently and within a collaborative team environment
- Experience with Microsoft-based ERP systems, including Business Central or other Microsoft financial platforms
- Exposure to project-based accounting or budget tracking environments
- Experience supporting multi-department financial operations
