Seeking a Program Therapist I or II to join the dedicated Inpatient Mental Health team in St. Paul, where we provide 24/7 psychiatric care to stabilize children and adolescents between the ages of 6-18 with immediate acute safety concerns. The 22 inpatient health unit cares for kids as young as 6 years old up to 18 and still in high school in a supportive and therapeutic environment.
- Schedule: Monday – Friday, 9am – 5:30pm
Department Overview
The Acute Mental Health department at Children's Minnesota includes our partial hospitalization programs as well as the inpatient mental health unit in St. Paul. These programs provide short term, stabilization services for children and adolescents experiencing acute mental health concerns. These intensive services are designed to address mental health symptoms that pose a safety risk or significant impact to the child or adolescent's daily functioning.
The Program Therapist works closely with the inpatient psychiatric providers to lead treatment for patients who struggle with high-risk psychiatric needs (such as suicidal thoughts, homicidal thoughts, and/or psychosis.) Collaborate with the multi-disciplinary care team to develop treatment goals, assess performance towards goals, and complete discharge or transition planning as indicated.
Provide individual, family, and group therapy in an acute mental health setting (this may include: IOP, PHP, or inpatient mental health unit).
Provide crisis intervention services, resource mobilization, or triage of psychosocial, emotional, or behavioral concerns.
Program Therapists are trained in using physical holds and restraints and may be in high-stress situations; depending on the patient and program's needs, they may be required to support or facilitate holds or restraints.
The Program Therapist II may be asked to provide formal or informal clinical supervision depending on the candidate's qualifications and program needs.
Required Education/License (Program Therapist 1):
- Master's degree from an accredited counseling, social work or marriage and family therapy program
- LGSW, LADC, LAMFT, LPC, LP or licensure eligibility to provide clinical mental health services under supervision in the State of Minnesota. Pursuing independent licensure in Minnesota (LMFT, LICSW, LPCC, or LP).
- BLS certification (Basic Life Support)
- Work experience in acute mental health or programmatic care setting preferred
Required Education/License (Program Therapist 2):
- Master's degree from an accredited counseling, social work or marriage and family therapy program
- LICSW, LMFT, or LPCC or licensure eligibility to provide clinical mental health services under supervision in the State of Minnesota.
- BLS certification (Basic Life Support)
Experience:
- One year work experience providing counseling in a health care or related pediatric setting preferred
- Two or more years of work experience in a pediatric-related setting preferred
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Curiosity and willingness to develop clinical skills toward the ability to exercise independent judgement and work autonomously.
- Ability to manage competing demands in a fast-paced clinic or hospital environment.
- Exhibits a high degree of professionalism, strong interpersonal skills, and the ability to work collaboratively.
- Ability to assess and provide intervention services to children and adolescents in acute crisis / experiencing suicidal ideation.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

When determining individual pay rates, we carefully consider a wide range of factors including but not limited to market indicators for the specific role, the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate, internal equity and organizational needs.
