The Center for Health Statistics and Informatics (CHSI) is responsible for department-wide initiatives to improve the effectiveness of our work through better health information systems, increased application of epidemiologic methods of analysis, strong liaisons with public health organizations and schools of public health, and effective partnerships with local health agencies and professionals. CHSI houses the Office of Vital Records, responsible for registering all California vital events and providing birth, death, and marriage records to the public. In addition, CHSI is involved in many cross-cutting and innovative data projects including the statewide Open Data Portal and Health Information Exchange.

Job Description And Duties

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by ensuring the timely registration of Death and Fetal Death Certificates and processing amendments for the people and communities we serve.

The Program Technician II (PT II) receives, reviews, and processes Death and Fetal Death Certificates and is responsible for processing affidavits to amend errors on death and fetal death records.

The PT II reviews certificates to ensure acceptability for registration in the Electronic Death Registration System (EDRS) and Fetal Death Registration Module (FDRM) in a timely manner. The incumbent is responsible for identifying errors, and ensuring completed work is accurate, neat, and well organized.

The PT II resolves issues from the EDRS and FDRM Helpdesk regarding disposition permits, password resets, and/or faxed attestations. These issues may be resolved using calls, emails, and written correspondence.

The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Supervising Program Technician II, Chief of the Death Registration Processing Team.

This is a Limited Term position that may be extended or become Permanent.

Eligibility Information

If you are new to California State Service, you must take and pass the examination for this classification to be eligible for hire. Current state employees without transfer or list eligibility must also complete and pass the examination for this classification to qualify for this position.

Telework Information

This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.

Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
