Boston College Campus School is seeking a dedicated Registered Nurse to oversee student health care, medications, and emergency response on campus. Qualifications

Responsibilities

Job Description

The Campus School at Boston College is a private, publicly funded special education day school within the Lynch School of Education and Human Development on the Boston College campus. The Campus School educates students ages 3-22 with extensive support needs, including complex medical needs.

Summary

HIRING RANGE: $80,000 - $85,000

Responsible for coordination and monitoring of the total health care program for students with multiple disabilities, including complex health care needs.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for daily administration of medications to Campus School students, including obtaining appropriate medical orders from parents/guardians and physicians and ensuring that appropriate dosages and pharmacy bottles are stored in a locked medical area.
  • Responsible for recognition, knowledge, and treatment of specific seizure disorders, lacerations, acute illness, nausea/vomiting, human bites, anaphylaxis, chest physical therapy, suctioning, nebulizer treatments, gastrostomy feedings, Mickey button maintenance, and other medical needs or emergencies.
  • Provides health education and training to teachers and support staff to ensure that medical protocols are in place for each student in the event of an emergency. This includes training related to food allergies, seizure control, specific disabilities, adverse medication side effects, G-tube feedings and replacements, infection control, unusual precautions, exposure to bloodborne pathogens according to OSHA standards, safety, first aid, and CPR.
  • Communicates effectively and professionally with students’ families and caregivers regarding student health needs, medical concerns, care plans, and follow-up as appropriate. Builds collaborative relationships with families to support continuity of care between home and school.
  • Communicates with the administration, in collaboration with the head nurse, in real time on all important matters to address both emergency and non-emergency situations.
  • Maintains the confidentiality and security of student health and medical information and follows all applicable HIPAA requirements, school policies, and other regulations governing the privacy and protection of student health information.
  • Maintains current professional licensure and completes all required continuing education units and professional development activities necessary to maintain licensure and remain current in nursing practices, regulations, and standards of care.
  • Responsible for ensuring that a yearly physical examination is conducted by each student’s physician, including vision, hearing, and dental screening.
  • Responsible for management of all necessary immunization information as required by the Department of Public Health and Department of Education, as well as ensuring completion and updating of Intake Packets for each student.
  • Completes health care assessments and attends Individualized Education Program (IEP) meetings and team meetings as requested.
  • Implements and updates medical policies and procedures.
  • Supervises University nursing students while on their assigned clinical placements.
  • Works in collaboration with the nurse practitioner consultant in developing health care procedures and supporting student medical care.
  • Completes daily attendance records and follows up on student absences as appropriate.
  • Supports the mission of the Boston College Campus School.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises nursing student interns from the School of Nursing at Boston College.

Requirements
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND EXPERIENCE

Minimum Education Requirements

Bachelor’s degree; Registered Nurse; DESE School Nurse license preferred (not required)

Minimum Experience Requirements

Minimum of one year experience working in pediatric nursing with students with special health care needs.
