Job summary

Yonkers Partners in Education (YPIE) in Jersey City, NJ, seeks a part-time certified ELA teacher to support high school students after school. You will provide targeted ELA remediation, tutoring, and lead YPIE Jersey City’s Speech and Debate Major, including lesson design, competition prep, and progress tracking.

JOB MISSION

YPIE programs are focused on preparing students with the academic and life skills needed for college success. The more ready students are for college, the higher the likelihood they’ll succeed. YPIE is seeking a part-time certified ELA teacher to provide targeted English Language Arts support to high school students and lead YPIE Jersey City’s Speech and Debate Major. This role will combine ELA remediation, homework assistance, and engaging instruction that strengthens students’ reading, writing, speaking, argumentation, and critical-thinking skills. This part-time role will be based in Jersey City, NJ.

Responsibilities & Results

Afterschool Instruction (up to 16 hours weekly)

• Teach and support students after school in the following areas:
  • ELA Remediation: Plan and deliver targeted instruction and tutoring to strengthen students’ reading comprehension, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and other foundational ELA skills.
  • Homework Assistance: Provide individualized and small-group academic support so students can successfully complete ELA assignments, strengthen study habits, and build confidence as independent learners.
  • Speech and Debate Major: Lead YPIE’s Speech and Debate Major, developing and facilitating engaging lessons in public speaking, speech writing, research, argumentation, critical thinking, debate case development, delivery, and rebuttal skills.
  • Competition Preparation: Research and select speech and debate events appropriate for students across grade and experience levels. Support students in selecting events, developing original speeches or debate cases, conducting research, structuring arguments, and refining delivery and rebuttal skills for participation in local tournaments and other authentic performance opportunities.
  • Student Progress & Feedback: Provide ongoing, actionable feedback on speeches, debate cases, performance rounds, and written materials. Monitor student participation and skill development, maintain strong records, and use data and student work to adjust instruction and target support.
  • Additional Instruction: Support special events, electives, team-building activities, and other academic interventions as needed.

Candidate Qualifications

To be eligible for consideration:

• Must hold a teaching certification or certificate of eligibility, with a strong preference for certification in English Language Arts at the secondary level.
• Experience teaching, tutoring, or providing academic intervention to high school students in ELA.
• Strong knowledge of reading, writing, and literacy instruction, including the ability to identify skill gaps and provide targeted remediation.
• Experience with and commitment to ensuring equity for a diverse population of students.
• Proven organizational and program tracking skills.

• Demonstrated experience with Speech and Debate, such as coaching or teaching high school or college Speech and Debate students or competitive participation at the high school or college level.
• An outcomes-focused orientation and experience helping students make measurable academic progress.
• Experience differentiating instruction and supporting students with a range of academic needs.
• Experience working with, tracking, and analyzing data to target student support and evaluate effectiveness.
• Experience preparing students for speech and debate competitions, including event selection, speech or case development, research, argumentation, delivery, and post-competition reflection.
• Flexibility to attend occasional evening or weekend speech and debate competitions or events, based on program needs.
• Bilingual fluency in a language spoken by our YPIE Jersey City families.

JOB DETAILS

• Location: This position is based in-person in Jersey City, NJ, on the campus of Saint Peter’s University
• Hours: 3-6PM Monday-Thursday plus planning time (up to 16 hours/week)
• Calendar: September-June
• Start Date: October 1, 2026
• Hourly rate: $40/hour
• Reporting to: Director, Readiness
