Lines of Authority

This position is supervised by the Program Director of their Designee. Unless specifically designated this position does not supervise other personnel. The position may require periodic participation in peer review activities.

Position Summary

The Peer Support Supervisor oversees the daily operations, billing compliance, and program integration of the Peer and Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) team. This role balances direct staff leadership with operational management to ensure high-quality, recovery-oriented care that meets all Arizona Health Care Cost Containment System (AHCCCS) and administrative standards [azahcccs.gov].

Duties and Responsibilities
Staff Leadership & Performance Management
  • Supervise and Mentor: Provide weekly individual and group supervision to Peer Support Specialists, focusing on skill development, recovery values, and role clarity.
  • Evaluate Performance: Conduct regular performance reviews, set measurable goals, and manage corrective action plans when necessary.
  • Recruit and Onboard: Lead hiring initiatives, interview candidates, and design comprehensive training plans for incoming peer staff.
  • Maintain Staff Boundaries: Monitor team wellness to prevent burnout, compassion fatigue, and boundary violations within clinical environments.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by their supervisor or designee.
Program Operations & Administration
  • Workflow Optimization: Manage staff scheduling, caseload assignments, and daily task prioritization to ensure optimal coverage.
  • Compliance and Documentation: Audit electronic health records (EHR) to ensure compliance with medical necessity, state billing regulations, and confidentiality laws (HIPAA).
  • Data Tracking: Collect, analyze, and report on program metrics and outcomes to demonstrate the impact of peer services impact to executive leadership, state auditors, and health plans.
  • Administer and facilitate classes for new PRSS compliance.
  • Verify that all team members maintain their active state registries, credentials, and annual compliance standards.
Strategic Integration & Advocacy
  • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Act as the primary liaison between peer staff and clinical, medical, or administrative leadership to champion the integration of lived-experience roles.
  • Policy Development: Help design and refine organizational policies to align with AHCCCS Office of Individual and Family Affairs (OIFA) standards
Primary Contacts
  • Frequent interaction with clients and their support system, usually their family.
  • Interface as needed with peers and other clinical team's members.
  • Collaboration, as appropriate, with other community resources/referral agencies, with the customer's consent.
Position Requisites
Qualifications and Experience
Required
  • State PRSS Certification: Must hold an active credential as a Peer and Recovery Support Specialist (PRSS) from an AHCCCS-recognized training entity [azahcccs.gov].
  • Must qualify as a Behavioral Health Technician (BHT) or Behavioral Health Professional (BHP) under Arizona state regulations.
  • Minimum of 3 years working as a PRSS, with at least 3-4 years in a team lead, coordinator, or supervisory capacity.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor's degree in a human services field preferred.
  • Current Arizona Driver's License.
  • Must be at least 21years of age.
  • Comply with a Drug Free workplace.
  • Knowledge and ability to define the needs of the client served.
For Those Working With SMI:
  • Knowledge of symptoms related to qualifying diagnosis.
  • Ability to identify and communicate signs of regression and deterioration.
  • Knowledge of interventions to foster self-care and ADL skill development.
For Those Working with Children/Adolescent:
  • Knowledge and training in development stages and interface of development with childhood disorder.
  • Knowledge of Behavior Management and ability to develop age-appropriate interventions.
  • Able to communicate at an age-appropriate level.
For Those Working with Substance Abuse:
  • Able to identify signs and symptoms of Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency.
  • Knowledge of range of treatment for dependence including relapse, prevention, strategies and self-help groups.
  • Able to provide a diagnostic impression per DSM IV criteria for Substance Abuse and Chemical Dependency.
  • Knowledge of history of substance dependence and of the biopsychosocial influences and effects of dependencies.
For Those Working With DD:
  • Knowledge of symptoms related to qualifying diagnosis.
  • Ability to identify and communicate signs of regression and deterioration.
  • Knowledge of Article 9 (customer rights) of State Requirements.
  • Knowledge of Customer Intervention Techniques relative to self-care and ADL skill development.
Preferred
  • CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Knowledge of entitlement process and local resources.
  • (4) years Behavioral Health Experience for BHT case management level
