The Program Manager of the Injury Prevention and Community Outreach (IPCO) program at Stead Family Children’s Hospital (SFCH) leads efforts to reduce unintentional childhood injuries throughout the state of Iowa and beyond through education, outreach, and strategic initiatives. This position is responsible for designing, implementing, promoting, and evaluating the pediatric Injury Prevention and Community Outreach program in collaboration with hospital leadership, faculty, staff, and community partners. Operating on-site at UI Health Care Medical Center – University Campus, Stead Family Children’s Hospital, the manager is accountable for our comprehensive pediatric injury prevention program activities and actively participated in travel-required outreach initiatives (local, state, national levels).

Position Responsibilities (Key Areas of Responsibility)

  • Operational and Financial Management
  • Responsible for overall development and ongoing management of the SFCH Injury Prevention and Community Outreach programs and services, including but not limited to the SFCH Safety Store, and the pediatric injury prevention community outreach program.
  • Implement and plan new IPCO programs and services.
  • Evaluate program operations in meeting stated objectives. Monitor progress, analyze program data, and generate comprehensive reports.
  • Direct budget development, oversee budget operations, and assure budgetary issues are resolved. This includes expense management, financial statement reconciliation, and fiscal reporting to hospital leadership and granting agencies.
  • Accountable for SFCH Safety Store operations including revenue generation through retail operations and vendor relationship management.
  • Evaluate financial quotes, select bids, and coordinate purchasing decisions.
  • Strategic Planning
  • Recommend or develop and implement strategic plans for SFCH IPCO program safety and budget priorities. These include but are not limited to:
    • ATV safety, bike safety, child passenger safety, firearm safety, lawn mower safety, safe sleep education, and the Safety Store at Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
  • Accountable for implementation and oversight of new program services and expansion efforts.
  • Serve as Program Coordinator for the Injury Free Coalition for Kids (IFCK) of Iowa City at Stead Family Children’s Hospital. Work in partnership with the Principal Investigator (program director) to align efforts with national pediatric injury prevention standards, develop and manage coalition relationships, update/manage Injury Free website, develop and share IFCK participation outcomes/deliverables with leadership on an annual basis.
  • Conduct periodic evaluations of program impact using established pediatric injury prevention metrics.
  • Communication and Outreach
  • Develop and execute communication strategies to enhance awareness and program engagement.
  • Represent and/or lead on behalf of the University and Stead Family Children’s Hospital in local, state, and national injury prevention efforts, including participation in professional presentations, journal publication, and development/oversight of pediatric injury prevention educational programs, task force teams, etc.
  • Manage IPCO team members responsible for coordinating large-scale events (health fairs, school presentations, conferences, legislative advocacy).
  • Establish and maintain partnerships with key stakeholders, including community organizations, advocacy groups, and healthcare professionals.
  • Lead teams in creating and implementing educational materials, publications, and promotional content. Examples include but are not limited to injury prevention websites, social media platforms, and printed materials.
  • Compliance
  • Ensure adherence to applicable local, state, and national regulations governing injury prevention programs.
  • Maintain compliance standards across program operations and recommend policy updates.
  • Prepare reports, maintain records, and implement policies to uphold regulatory integrity.
  • Quality Improvement
  • Implement pediatric injury prevention initiatives aimed at optimizing organizational efficiency.
  • Analyze and report program quality and effectiveness through surveys, data collection, and participant feedback.
  • Evaluate and report injury prevention outreach impact and recommend necessary program adjustments.
  • Foster continuous improvement initiatives for enhanced service delivery and measurable outcomes.
  • Use data-driven insights to refine strategic direction and resource allocation.
  • Leadership/Supervision
  • Provide functional and administrative supervision to staff, offering mentorship, direction, and performance feedback.
  • Hire, develop, and manage employees, ensuring compliance with UI policies and fostering professional growth and employee engagement.
  • Lead multidisciplinary and community-based teams to achieve and exceed program objectives.
  • Cultivate a collaborative, mission-driven work environment that prioritizes excellence and innovation.

Education Requirements

  • Master’s degree in communications, marketing, public health, or a related field, or a Bachelor’s degree and an equivalent combination of education and experience.


Experience Requirements

  • At least three years of administrative and program management experience.
  • Minimum three years of demonstrated excellence in public speaking.
  • Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs.
  • Must maintain a valid driver’s license.


Desired Qualifications

Highly Desired:

  • Proven leadership in community outreach and partnership development.
  • Experience in retail operations and event planning.
  • Child Passenger Safety Technician certification required within six months of employment.


Desired

  • At least three years of experience with University policies, procedures, and regulations.
  • Grant writing proficiency and experience securing program funding.
  • Experience in pediatric injury prevention.
