Job description

Pinnacle Health Medical Group of UPMC Central Pennsylvania is hiring a Full-Time Advanced Practice Provider Program Manager to oversee APP activities within the Central Pennsylvania (CPA) Primary Care Service Line for UPMC.

Location: 3 Walnut Street, Suite 205, Lemoyne PA 17043

Hours: M-F - daylight

The ideal candidate will balance both administrative and clinical responsibilities. Key administrative duties include directing the APP primary care orientation and training program, recruiting and interviewing candidates, managing performance expectations, and leading initiatives that support continuing education, provider retention, and high-quality clinical care delivery.

This position will also have a reporting relationship to the Primary Care Service Line Administration and the Director of Advanced Practice.

Purpose

Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) are defined as Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Nurse Midwives, and other advanced practice groups who deliver patient care provider services and act within their professional scopes of practice. Having adequate numbers of APPs in all the APP professions is critical for UPMC Pinnacle to successfully deliver excellent care to our patients. Creating and maintaining a supportive work environment to recruit and retain APPs is a key initiative for UPMC Pinnacle. The Program Manager, APP will work collaboratively with the UPMC Pinnacle Chief Medical Officer, UPMC Pinnacle Chief Nursing Officer, UPMC Pinnacle hospital VPMAs, UPMC Pinnacle hospital Medical Staff Presidents, UPMC Pinnacle Administrative Leaders and the UPMC Chief Advanced Practice Officer (hereinafter referred to as Clinical and Administrative Leadership) to promote the role of APPs and build a supportive work environment for them within the organization.

Responsibilities
  • Develop UPMC Pinnacle APP initiatives and programming to strengthen and develop the role of APPs within UPMC Pinnacle through collaboration with clinical and administrative leadership.
  • Assist in developing and managing focused management, compensation, recruitment and retention programs for APPs.
  • Direct and motivate clinical and administrative staff to support and execute upon the goals and initiatives defined by executive leadership in support of APP programs.
  • Establish and maintain UPMC Pinnacle policies and procedures defining APP and physician collaborators/supervisor activities and responsibilities.
  • Work with the VPMAs and Medical Staff Leadership to standardized privileging and scope of practice for APPs.
  • Communicate regularly with the Clinical and Administrative Leadership on strategy, clinical practice and issues regarding APPs. Communicates regularly with the UPMC Chief Advanced Practice Officer/Executive.
  • Works the UPMC Chief Advanced Practice Officer/Executive to standardize our approach to APPs across UPMC.
  • Innovate and support programming and research which evaluates and maximizes APPs in progressive new models of health care delivery at top of license.
  • Coordinates and facilitates continuing education, student placement program, and practice standards for APPs in collaboration with the Learning Institute.
  • Assists Clinical and Administrative Leadership in developing and monitoring performance indicators related to APPs.
  • Analyze developments within the APP disciplines, including changes in Commonwealth and Federal programs and regulations, State and Federal legislation, accrediting organizations, etc. and provide analysis, recommendations and action plans to guide organizational strategic decision making.
  • Represent and articulate UPMC Pinnacle's vision and priorities on behalf of UPMC Pinnacle Clinical and Administrative Leadership to APPs, State and Federal Boards and Associations, APP educational and training programs and all external regulatory and related professional organizations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • Master's degree with concentration in healthcare, management, or education or 5+ years of experience.
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Nurse Midwife degree/licensure required.
  • Knowledge of APP accreditation standards and Federal and Commonwealth medical licensure and registration requirements, reimbursement regulations and standards, as well as documentation and collaboration/supervision requirements.
  • Ability to recognize major issues confronting the health care industry relative to the practice and deployment of APPs in all health care settings.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including negotiations and reaching settlements in disputes. Ability to communicate effectively in a positive manner with executive leadership, APPs, physicians and department managers.
  • Excellent organizational skills. Ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, complete multiple tasks in a limited period and handle large volumes of paperwork efficiently.
Educational/Knowledge Requirements
  • The individual must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care and/or interact appropriately to the patients served as specified below. They must also demonstrate knowledge of the principles relative to the patient's age-specific needs and to provide the care needs as described in the department policy and procedures.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience as a certified nurse practitioner or physician assistant required.
  • Previous experience in progressive clinical and administrative leadership roles and responsibilities
  • A demonstrated excellence in clinical care delivery and professional leadership
  • Knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider reimbursement regulations and standards, as well as documentation and collaboration/supervision requirements.
  • Knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider accreditation standards and Federal and Commonwealth medical licensure and registration requirements.
  • Knowledge of Federal and Commonwealth regulations, legislative processes and governmental agencies pertaining to the clinical practice of primary categories of Advanced Practice Providers.
  • Understanding of operational, documentation, and reimbursement requirements of Advanced Practice Providers in diverse clinical settings.
  • Knowledge of Advanced Practice Provider educational requirements and associated program requirements (i.e., collaborative agreement, rotation requirements, program accreditation, policies and procedures).
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in a positive manner with system-wide executive leadership, -Advanced Practice Providers, physicians, and departmental management.
  • Skilled at negotiations and reaching settlements in disputes.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize, meets deadlines, complete multiple tasks in a limited period of time and handle large volumes of paperwork efficiently.
  • Ability to recognize major issues confronting the health care industry relative to the practice and deployment of Advanced Practice Providers in all health care settings.
  • Strong technical, analytical, and judgment skills to interpret regulations and supervise staff.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances
  • Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist, Certified Registered Nurse Practitioner, Physician Assistant or Nurse Midwife degree / licensure.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) OR Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)
