Melwood Inc. seeks a Program Leader to design and lead diverse camp activities within an inclusive setting. You will collaborate with the Program Coordinator to run camps and retreats, and you will adapt activities so every participant can engage and learn.

Qualifications

  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent required; BA/BS in related field preferred.
  • Certifications in activity focus area (ropes, lifeguard, water safety, etc.) required.
  • Valid US or international driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead activities for the assigned focus area, ensuring safety and inclusivity.
  • Maintain and clean the activity area, keeping spaces safe and well kept.
  • Write lesson plans with clear goals linked to the focus area.
  • Collaborate with staff to adapt activities for all participants to participate.
  • Partner with Head Program Leader to create inclusive and therapeutic activities.

Job description

The Program Leader facilitates and leads dynamic camp activities based on their activity focus area. The Program Leader works cooperatively with the Program Coordinator and Head Program Leader to run the program aspects of Camp Accomplish and Access Adventures retreats. Each Program Leader will have an activity focus area.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • 1.Develop and lead activities for the activity focus area that are creative, dynamic, fun and safe for campers of all ages and abilities.
  • 2.Facilitates the upkeep of assigned activity area, ensuring that all areas are safe and well maintained.
  • 3.Develop and write lesson plans with clear goals that are clearly tied to the activity focus area and are intentional in purpose.
  • 4.Works closely with staff to adapt activities so each participant is able to participate.
  • 5.Works with the Head Program Leader to develop new activities and programs that are inclusive and therapeutic for participants of all abilities.
  • 6.Assist the Head Program Leader and other staff in the coordination and facilitation of evening programs, theme days and special events.
  • 7.Lives with assigned cabin group and staff in a respectful manner, participating in building a positive and safe camp living environment.
  • 8.Works to promote safety, independence, exploration and integration into the community.
  • 9.Adhere to State of Maryland, PATH, American Camp Association, CARF and Melwood policies and procedures.
  • 10.Adhere to and further the mission of Melwood by creating a supportive environment for campers and staff.
  • 11.Perform other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED

The Program Leader is supervised by the Head Program Leader.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to stand/walk/climb 90% of work time. Must be able to lift or carry 75 pounds, push and/or pull 100 pounds. Must be able to stoop, kneel, crawl, climb, and reach. All of these requirements are necessary in order lead lessons and programs, as well as work in a barn efficiently. Must be able to hear, and must be able to verbally communicate with users, other staff. Must be able to see to assure safe procedures are being followed. Must be able to work outdoors in extreme weather.

Staff may be required to move between program focus areas as needed and must be willing to work with people of all ages and ability levels, including personal care and lifting when necessary.

QUALIFICATIONS
  • H.S. Diploma or equivalent required. BA/BS in special education, therapeutic recreation, psychology or related field (achieved or in progress) and previous experience working in an inclusive camp environment preferred. Demonstrated ability in providing support in a respectful manner to campers of all abilities.
  • Certifications required based on activity focus area (ropes facilitation, lifeguard, water safety instruction, etc.)
  • Valid US or international driver’s license and ability to obtain a DOT physical is not required but is preferred.
