Job summary

Valley of the Sun YMCA is seeking a Part-Time Head Lifeguard in Phoenix to lead the lifeguard team, ensure safe swimming conditions, and promote a positive, safety-focused atmosphere for staff and members.

You will work with the aquatic supervisor on staffing, budgeting, training, and creating a schedule that allows breaks and cleaning time. Certification in Lifeguard and Swim Instruction is required.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18.
• Minimum of one year working as a lifeguard; YMCA experience preferred.
• Current Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Certification.
• Ability to relate to diverse groups and communicate clearly under pressure.

Responsibilities

• Leads the lifeguard team to meet pool operations and YMCA objectives.
• Assist aquatic supervisor with recruiting, hiring, and training lifeguards.
• Monitor lifeguard expenses to stay within the department budget.
• Create schedules with breaks and cleaning time.
• Know and implement emergency procedures and respond immediately.
• Maintain records per YMCA and Health Department codes.
• Foster positive relationships with members and staff.
• Create a mission-based environment engaging all in the YMCA movement.
• Attend staff meetings and supervise junior lifeguards as needed.

Description

Leads the lifeguard team in maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck, and surrounding areas. Creates a positive atmosphere that promotes safety and engagement for staff, volunteers, and members.

RESPONSIBILITIES OF A HEAD LIFEGUARD:

• Leads the lifeguard team to meet operational needs of the pool and fulfill YMCA objectives.
• Assists aquatic supervisor in recruiting, hiring, and training of lifeguards and junior lifeguards.
• Works with aquatic supervisor to ensure lifeguard expenses fall within the department budget.
• With aquatic supervisor, create the lifeguard schedule, incorporating time for breaks and cleaning.
• Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately.
• Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or Health Department code.
• Maintains effective, positive relationships with the members, participants, and other staff.
• Create a mission-based environment which enables everyone to be engaged in the YMCA movement.
• Attends all staff meetings and in-service training; trains and supervises junior lifeguards as assigned.
• Completes essential functions of a lifeguard while serving in-ratio as needed for proper operation.

REQUIREMENTS TO BE A HEAD LIFEGUARD:

• Minimum age of 18.
• Minimum of one year working as a lifeguard; preferably with the YMCA.
• Current Lifeguard and Swim Instructor Certification.
• Ability to relate to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
• Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
• Ability to think in the abstract, solve problems, and make quick decisions under stress.
• Have adequate memory skills to be able to retain and apply lifeguard training knowledge.
• Ability to effectively communicate information with members, peers, and supervisors.
• Must be observant, safety conscious, and able to react calmly and quickly in an emergency.
